I thought about this TV license thing and i came up to a conclusion. These day's we have to pay for a TV license if we want to buy a TV set from Hifi corp or Game or Makro ect. There is toptv and dstv out there that we also have to pay to view the channels. Why don't they implement the TV license with the monthly subscription of toptv and dstv. So you still pay for the TV license and you pay for the channels you are watching in one package. So when you buy a new TV, then you don't have to pay for TV license and if you want to view tv channels, then you have to get a decoder to view the channels.SABC channels will also be on a decoder in the future so you wont view any channels on the TV without a decoder. (The South African Department of Communications (DoC) has set the DTT switch-on date for April 2012, with the aim of switching off analogue TV broadcasts by December 2013.) Is this not a good idea or not. What do you think about this solution!

So top tv & dstv subscribers should subsidise the other millions that don't have top tv or dstv? Are you an ANC politician by any chance?

+1

And by the way, even DSTV and TopTV subscribers have to (or are supposed to) pay a TV license. The license is not for content, it's a license to "receive" a television signal.

This deadline will never be met. Even first world (or even less inept) countries cannot accomplish DTT in the timeline that the DoC has proposed. Go do some research and you'll see what I mean.

A TV License is R250 a year, that is such a small amount why do people make massive deals over it?

I don't have an issue with getting a TV license, or even with paying R250 a year for it.
I have a big issue with how difficult they make it for you to cancel/get rid of the TV license once you've got it.

It's just horror stories after horror stories about the lengths SABC require you to go to to prove that you no longer have a TV or no longer need a license, and about how people get handed over to collection agencies and are hounded into paying crazy amounts, far more than the allegedly outstanding fees.

For this exact reason I do not own a TV, nor a TV License, nor will I ever.

Too late for me. I need to find a way to ditch the thing :(

You get nothing for R250.

wrong, I get a nice little FICA document that serves as proof of residence whenever I need to apply for something where they want proof, and it's just the right size to slip inside the cover of my ID book :D

I just use a printed bank statement, or utilities bill.

Don't see why I need to pay SABC R250 per year for the pleasure of having one of those, when things i really NEED give me the paperwork I require anyway.

I have everything else sent to a post box address, besides paying your tv licence is the right thing to do :D

It realy burns my a$$ to pay R250 for a TV liscence

If i want to buy a new TV, then i have to take out a TV license for it, even if i just want to play ps3 on it. Now i have to pay for the stupid license even if i dont use the TV to watch channels on it. So why pay for the stupid license thing then.
