What TV can I get with a budget of around R5000.00

It will be used for mainly watching DVD's (not blueray) and watching TV (not HD).
I will also use it for Xbox gaming.

There will be hardly any sport being watched.

Your expertise will be appreciated.

Samsung 42" plasma for R5600ish. No doubt about it that it will be the best for TV. And you will be amazed at the blacks and colours and naturalness of the picture when watching DVDs and other media. Plasmas are also fantastic for gaming because of their fast response time.

That said, always best to go and check out the sets in store. I'm sure the TV quality and bigger screen for your buck will sway you towards the plasma. :D

Agreed on Plasma... Pooky, you might get the LG 42" for even less. One of my colleagues is very happy with it.

I went into Game today and had a look.

There were 2 tv's that caught our eyes.

One was a Samsung 42' Plasma, the other a Samsung 40" LCD (Prices R5799 and R6999 respectively)

Is the LCD a good option, cause I think we preferred that...

help help quick quick.

Oh btw the LCD is full HD the plasma only HD ready.

Yes the LCD still looked marginally better.

Impossible. Serious. :) The only way that is possible is if the TVs were hooked to different SD sources. It is a fact that plasma is better for SD TV. The only LCD that could come near to a plasma's performance at SD TV is a higher end LCD, usually around twice the price.

The plasma will not "buzz" or "shimmer" from viewing distance - you were obviously standing 1m from the screen.

No to my eyes the LCD looked better. Same picture source.
I stood close and far away and the plasma is very nice but I think the LCD might have the upper hand...

This is the LCD: http://www.game.co.za/SAMSUNG-40INCH-FHD-LCD-TV-LA40C530102CM-535340.aspx

I know the exact models you saw and I have studied them myself.

It could not have been a SD source if you feel Series 5 LCD was better (or the SD sources were different). Every forumite here that has bought the 40C530 or similarly the EX400 Sony (comparative model) has commented on its relatively poor performance at SD TV (yeah it's better than Series 4/BX300 or whatever the Sony equivalent is). The only possibility that it was better at SD TV than plasma is if it was a higher end LCD, the source was in fact not the same on both sets, or if there was fairy dust involved.

As much as I cannot side with any of those options assuming the SD sources were the same, my tinfoil hat is siding with the second option that the SD sources were different - after all, there is more money in LCD than plasma.

I guarantee you that a Series 5 LCD cannot beat a Series 4 plasma at SD TV.

have to agree with postmanpot here...

I was looking at the exact same tv's only last week :D

something funny going on in that store! maybe try look in another one?

for the record I went with the 42" Samsung Plasma PS42C431, while you were looking at the PS42C430. What is the difference? Heaven knows... but according to Samsung its a later revision thats all, hence the extra R200.

so happy with it

Hey now... Maybe they were different sources, and they were sending the better source to the plasma!

Naaat.

+111

Pooky, I looked at those very sets before I decided to take the Samsung plasma. Don't be fooled by the HD Ready thing. The TV is simply awesome and I wouldn't swop it for any other.

Does your 431's bezel have a red tint perhaps? At some point Samsung was using last digit as bezel colour indicator.

Oh please, you know very well yourself that it's impossible. Do you have anything useful to add or are you just trolling? I mean, keeping me my toes...

I don't think I'm trolling at all... I'm just suprised. I'm not saying that the LCD is better at all... But when someone says what they experience, you proceed to tell them they experienced it wrong?

the facts speak for themselves

anyone telling me that SD tv DOESNT look better on a Plasma vs LCD (same level, perhaps 100hz) is talking out of his a$$

no offense Pooky
