TV

Okay so it's between these two TV's:

http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/...v/PS42C430A1XXA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail

and

http://www.samsung.com/my/consumer/.../LA40C530F1RXXM/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail

Which one?

I'm worried the plasma will give a glare with lights as the screen is shiny, but I had a look at it again and it does look pretty good. Bear in mind I'm not gonna be watching any sport.

I bought the Samsung plasma yesterday, and im very impressed, very good image quality, the colours are much more vivid that the other LCD’s I compared it with, but I did not compare it with the Samsung LCD, just remember, the LCD is only 40”, those 2 extra inches makes a difference, and if you are going to go with the LCD, just make sure it’s a 100hz, if its only 50hz be prepared for jittery images and motions

i agree, i have been done intense Plasma/LCd browsing the last couple of days, and the Sumsung Plasma is the best option, go to catsdigital and compare them for yourself......

I bought the LA40C530 a couple weeks back and am very happy with it so far. Bear in mind though I went LCD specifically because I don't watch any TV besides soccer. SD TV and specifically soccer look rather k@k on it - put it this way, I'd rather watch Dstv SD on my 74cm CRT Samsung as its easier on my eyes. However, for PS3 gaming and HD/FHD video it's brilliant. It has a built in media player (via USB input) so watching movies/series directly off an ext HDD is a huge bonus for me (I'm not sure if the plasma has the same functionality though, probably does). My only issue so far is the built-in sound is pretty crap at higher volumes but I output the TV into my Samsung HT via optical cable and that works well for me.

It is a common 'fact' these days that if you mainly watch SD TV and sport then your best option is a plasma. I personally can't agree as I don't own one.
My only personal experience with them is from a few years back. I remember watching a soccer match on an in-law's latest/greatest big screen plasma and it looked pretty crap. But apparently the newer model plasmas are great.

I watch no sport, and no HD content. I will be using it for SD TV and SD Movies and Xbox gaming....

The plasma can only display pics from its USB port which is a bit lame though.

well look at it this way, plasma and lcd will both cater for your xbox needs.

doesnt sound like lcd is going to cater for all your sd tv and sd movies needs... What I mean here is that the plasma is FAR more forgiving. for this reason alone plasma is the better option.

yes it does suck that usb doesnt play movies, but who cares. you can do something about that... buy a media player. you cant do something about crap looking sd tv/sd movies

seems pretty cut and dry to me

Plasmas also consume more power, and have shorter lifespans.

SD movies look perfect on my Sony KDL-40EX400.

That's largely a thing of the past. The Samsung plasma I have (same one HTC_guy has and the same one Pooky is considering) uses the same amount of power as every other LCD on the market. SD content looks really good on the plasma, but I'm afraid not on the LCD. I've tested my content on both sets and that's why I took the plasma.

it might look perfect to you, but whatever you say plasma is waaay better for a SD signal

:)

just to add, this Sony was one of the options that I was considering. When I saw that it was 60hz I ran for the hills... :D

Strange thing is when I've watched soccer on Dstv SD, there is an occasional but rather noticeable motion issue but with non-sport channels, I don't notice it much if even at all. Besides the annoying stretched looking image on the non-widescreen movie channels, it's pretty fine. The SD series I've watched via the media player are pretty clear and crisp as well. So basically, besides soccer, SD quality is ok on my 40" lcd.

Plasma. Anything SD = plasma.

Why not take your Xbox and compare on both TVs.

I never said that it didn't look better on a plasma  Look just saying, that SD content may look better on a plasma, but it may not necessarily look crap on an LCD (as everyone here seems to be implying). It depends a lot on the set itself. And when it comes to gaming and HD content then LCD wins. You can't even argue about that.

Besides, you'd have to be silly to let the difference between 60Hz and 100Hz be the deciding factor. If you can notice the extra 40 updates per second then congrats, you're superman :)

There are pros and cons with both and this debate will never end because people always need to justify their purchase - the same with gaming consoles. At the end of it people need to take their needs into account and base their purchase on that. SD content is better on the plasma, but it's not necessarily crap on some LCDs. By the same token, gaming and HD content is better on an LCD but not necessarily crap on a plasma.

So ultimately it comes down to whether the guy is going to be using it more for SD content or for gaming.

well according to the manual it can play movies/music and pics
and according to catsdigital’s description it can play HD content through the building media player

"You can even enjoy content stored on external devices in high definition on the PS42-C430, as it has a USB Video HD function and a range of codecs for photos, videos and music."

Dude, you have to be smoking something! Just ask the local LCD smartie geniuses...

They will tell you plasma is only better for SD! And that a 42" plasma is not a HD wide screen TV! And then they will go on telling you how the blacks on a triple-the-price LCD as as good!

:D:D

You can take that 'fact' right out of those inverted thingies...

:D

Not true any more, power usage has been touched on, regarding lifespan new Samsung plasmas are rather at 100,000 hours before half life...

That's about 30 years of average TV viewing...

;)

You are right. SD content on a triple-the-price LCD will be nearly as good...

Besides, you'd have to be silly to let the difference between 60Hz and 100Hz be the deciding factor. If you can notice the extra 40 updates per second then congrats, you're superman :)

Ya, perhaps not for non sport SD TV. I guarantee you you don't have to be a super hero to tell the difference between the two for sport though - sure you know this though.

Pray tell how "gaming and HD content" is comparable to "SD is better on plasma but not some LCDs".

So ultimately it comes down to whether the guy is going to be using it more for SD content or for gaming.

Not true. Gaming is awesome on plasma. How could it not be if plasmas have faster response time, better blacks, and better colours?
