Lol this is entertaining.

I have a 50 inch Full HD Samsung Plasma and a 46 inch Full HD Sony LCD

The plasma is so superior it really isnt funny.

So superior that we bought another one for the office and my bro ditched his LCD and bought the plasma after seeing mine.

Still maintain that a plasma will always be better than an LCD at the same price.

PS Remember I had a plasma for 2 years Bob. Bought it in Nov 2007 and sold it in Nov 2009 - primarily because of image retention and worry of burn in. I run quite a few static images and for my needs LCD was better. In the hundreds of threads were we argue, I say 'at least go look at the 2010 LCD screens and you'll be surprised'

You weren't here for our previous argument - but I got a test of black levels and my LCD (2009) was equal to a number of plasma screens and in some cases, bettered the black level of plasma screens. The white was obviously whiter which gave a better contrast - and viewing angles are much wider than one would think.

Ask TYR how is LCD is against his KURO plasma ... is it night and day?
Is close?
Is it closer than he thought?
Was it close enough to warrant him buying an LCD?

One just needs the right info in life to make the right choices - and LCD is not nearly as bad as Postman makes out

JK8 and I used to have heated arguments about cars, performances etc
IamPenguin and I used to argue about Xbox and Playstation 3
Postman and I argue about LCD and plasma.

At one point I thought the issue was me - but then reality kicked in and I know I'm always right Additional to that, 2 of the 3 above have been banned ...

...And the 3rd hasn't got a single infraction.

How vein. There is no argument between us, only your misunderstandings around facts. Plasma betters LCD for SD TV/sport. Period. Plasma as a technology generally produces deeper blacks and better colours. These are facts on paper, and in reality, as much as you want kick and moan, and misunderstand.

Any plasma beats any LCD
Any plasma beat mid level LCD
Any plasma beat high end LCD
High end plasma beat low end plasma

Not sure which "people" you are referring to , but I've never said plasma will take out any high end. I said many. And I said at SD TV/sport specifically.

That's an old plasma. Nice to see you never had IB-I though, thought you did, which is why you always harp on about it, using your old plasma as the common denominator. Image retention was worse on old plasmas.

Plasma will still demolish 2010 LCDs at SD TV/sport.

No one cares about your little 40" 6 Series and its specs. We all know it's a good TV. Does not negate that plasma, overall as a tech, is better for depth of blacks, better colours etc. No one has ever said any plasma will beat any LCD. If they did, then sure, use your meaningless test as an argument. Good luck finding those people though.

Postman has never made out that high end LCDs are bad. Only mid range at the same price as mid range plasma, and for SD TV/sport. SD TV/sport is decent on high end LCD, not as good as high end plasma though. Compare apples with apples.

His LCD costs R18,000+? Three times the price of a mid range plasma, lol, that would probably be as good for SD TV/sport specifically. And, his Kuro is an older generation plasma. Again, compare apples with apples. Didn't he go on to say he would like to compare one day with a high end Viera along with its mind blowing black levels? I think he knows it will be better...

The picture quality will be good on both sets since it is a HD source, however the plasma wins because of its much faster refresh rate, compared to the 40" LCD's 60Hz. And the 2" bigger.

60Hz is not acceptable for quality sport viewing.

I was actually watching HD soccer on a 40" Samsung 5 Series the other day. No doubt that plasma is much better. And those 2" really are huge, I was amazed at how small 40" LCD was after having some time with my 42" plasma.

Samsung are the leaders in TVs at the moment. They are not the brand they were like 5+ years ago when they weren't as established as Sony.

Go into the shop and test them for yourself. I know which one you will be walking out with.

And for about R1000 extra over the Sony EX400 40", you could get a 50" Samsung PS50C430...

Or, about R1000 less, and you get 2" extra.

And better image quality for sport.

For decent sport on LCD, you need high end, like Samsung 6 Series/Sony EX500 Series. They cost way more.

I recall him saying 'dare I say near KURO black levels' ... and btw, those Vieras lose black level as the set gets older.

Either way, it's a straw-man argument.

And they most likely cut down because there is more money in LCD. Of course LCD tech has improved a lot as well.

Right, I'll now refer to them as entry level plasmas. Only makes things harder for you at the end of the day - having entry plasmas beating high end LCDs at SD TV/sport. How embarrassing!

No, it obliterates any similarly priced LCDs at SD TV/sport, as well as some higher end LCDs at SD TV/sport. Remember, I'm not the only one claiming this. Others have attested it, too. Hint hint.

AFAIK, you're the only one who hasn't gone out and tested the 42"...

This is quite interesting on the PN50 C550 ...

The color performance was weak, with choppy gradient transitions and a lack of detail in both shadows and highlights. The biggest problem, though, was screen burn-in. Regular movie watchers may not even notice a problem if the scene is constantly shifting, but sports fans and gamers frequently have graphics fixed in the same position for hours. That could mean lingering ghost images for hours afterwards.

Overall, the Samsung PN50C550 is certainly not the best 50-inch we've reviewed, but it could be the right TV for the right kind of buyer. It got all the makings of a great choice for the serious movie cinephile.
