Two break-ins mid afternoon

 nicci too. Well she's a travel agent so nicci, get our tickets to Australia ready. I've had it with the crime here :D

Was this in Cape Town?
Same thing happened to some friends about a month ago in a 'secure' apartment block in Sea Point - apparently they're known affectionately around these parts as "The Crowbar Gang".

Standard practice all over the country.

Crowbars sort out any number of security gates and such...

Amateurs, looking at the damage they haven't been doing this too long. You can open those cheap Game security gates with a spade with out leaving any damage.

Sorry to dissapoint you but it also happens in OZ. My sister was more a victim of crime in OZ than in SA, she even had her toothbrush stolen when she was a student in Adelaide and the cleaned out her place.

I've been told that just about any security gate can be forced open using a car jack.

Sorry to hear about the break-in same thing happened to me last year this time , you should advise them to get a trellidor or maxidor , those gates in the picture are way to easy to break in we had a similar one :/

Yep. The bigger question is how they got into a "security complex".

Something that a lot of people don't realize.... security complexes are not as safe as they'd like to think. Somewhere around 70% of burglaries are inside complexes (1. move in, steal. 2. move in, move out, keep remotes, easy access. 3. Inside help to get remotes. 4 Once you're over the wall, security is often poor).

Nothing can really stand up to sustained pressure from a jack. It's more about the difficulty and delay, if they really want in, they'll get in.

It happens all over, at least the odds are just so much lower and her life is worth more than the toothbrush over there.

I have seen what it can do to 1cm thick burglar bars.
In that instance a diamond shaped jack (left tools coz they were disturbed).

I guess the jack is meant to move 1000+kg. So most burglar proofing cannot "survive" a force capable of doing that....

That type of security is a false sense of safety. No hassle breaking that open.

I don't think you need tools to open that sort of gate. Pathetic really, since they're R600, aren't they? Rather spend the extra and get a properly made one.

Burglar bars are best removed with a bobbejaan, it's far quicker and easier than a jack.

The key to securing things from an attack by car jack, is to cover the entire gate edge with plate, so that there's no place to "hook it in". Also, make sure that you've got a plate or hinge directly in line with the lock, especially on double gates. And don't be shy when specifying steel. We use 38 x 38 x 2 and 32 x 32 x 2 for our complexes.

It is actually sad to what extent we have to go to secure our homes. The other problem with complexes are that many of them have upwards of 50 units, so you dont know more than a handful of your neighbours. Thus you wont notice a potential burglar. People also move house a lot.
