Hey all

I just recently got a Kia Koup and while it isn't a performance car so to speak it is a lot more sporty than the golf 1.4 I have been squeezing into for the last good few years.

The car had just over 56K on the clock when I bought it and it still has the original tyres on (kumho solus) and they have like 5mm tread left on them so I have been looking for tyres just to prepare financially for next year.

The problem is that I know little of performance tyres, on the golf I got Michelin Energy XM2's but I know they aren't made in 17's ...

So my question would be, What is a good tyre that will fit the performance of the car and last moderately long without costing me my liver ? (was quoted on Michelin Primacy HP's @ R2500 a tyre)

Tyre Size: 215/45 17 (87H ... Not sure what this number is)

Regards.

Get yourself the Hankook Ventus V12 Evos. I currently have these on my Type R and have had absolutely no issues. They are a bit softer than the Bridgestones I had on before, but they grip just as well, if not better.

No offence, but there is absolutely no reason for you to get sport-rated tires. I spent R2500 a pop on 19" tires for my OPC. Any salesman that is indulging your fantasy about how fast your car is, and the the required rubber, should be kicked to the curb asap.

What did you put on?

I was using Michelin 255/35/19 on my cab at R5,200 a pop. I discovered Toyo T1 Sports at R2,400 each. I can't tell the difference between the 2. Curious what you got.

5mm is still a lot of life left. A new tyre has about 8mm of tread. The legal limit is about 1mm.

+1

The Koup is by no means a sports car what-so-ever. You don't need sport tyres. They will have no affect on performance / grip.

Just go to a tyre fitment centre and ask them to replace the tyres with a decent name brand and save the money.

I don't want super performance semi slick "wow very amaze much epic" tyres ... ... I just want tyres that can be pushed if needed that won't peel apart after 25K of usage ...

I know the Koup is by no means a sports car but it isn't a complete slouch either ... that is why I want decent tyres

The hankooks look good, will see what I can get them for today and I heard that Toyo TR1's are good as well

I tried Hankook on my last cab (also A6). After the first slip I went back and changed them. I don't belt it much anymore so suppose they won be okay now, just don't feel safe with them.

Why not use the same brand the car came with?

Because I don't know Kumho (it's just my naivity that is stopping me from getting them not the brand)

Guess I will skip on the hankooks

Check out the Toyo T1's. In Europe they are a competitor to Michelin - the reason I decided to try them out.
They feel and ride just like the Michelins I have anyways used on my car, and at half the price.

Minty import them directly. I get mine fitted at Minty's in Bedfordview. R2,400 per tyre for 255/35/19's.

Another brand I stay away from are Kumos. Also slipped on those even though they had a high speed rating. My wife had them on her A4 though and swore by them.

Had Hankooks on my previous ST and got over 50 000km's out of them and there was still plenty of tread left when I sold the car. They were definitely lighter than the bridgestones the car came with and were awesome in the rain.

Hankooks are brilliant, cant go wrong, although they are also qiuite pricey now.

which tyres would you recommend for reducing the sound of the road inside of your car? Many people say that soft tyres wear off quicker.

I think you just wasting money on a premium sports tyre on a nonperformance car.

Hankooks are good value and an overall good tyre especially for your car.
Next best would be the Pirelli Nero.
Of you don't take either the kumho, Pirelli or hankook, you wasting your money.

If you are currently driving with the Kumho's and are happy with them then there's no reason to think the Hankooks will be worse...especially not on a car of the Koup's type.

I have http://www.achillestyres.co.za on my Golf 5 GTi.

The only time I've ever had a slip is on a very wet road when pulling away a little bit too liberally. This is perfectly normal for a car with a bit of power and happens on the standard Continentals as well.

Last night I took two friends up Kloof Nek at great speed and velocity with the Achilles and not a slip in sight.
