Ubisoft: Piracy's basically killing PC

Arg!

omg killa! the xbox is going next! http://thepiratebay.org/search/xbox/0/99/0 Its the end of the world! All games are ganna stop cause of pirates!:eek:

PC games are ganna die:rolleyes: The freeken Xbox and PS3 are limited computers in fancy frocks.

Ive found that if a person pirates a game, its normally to try it out or because they cant afford it. Not much of an effect on that bottom line then...

Wizard have seen what happens to your console if you pirate and something goes wrong?

You guys can think what you like but the stats are on all the torrents and nzb sites, you can see piracy is killing pc and not the console.

Xbox live will not run if your not legit, you guys talk about DRM, think about why such things are needed.

Of course people are pirating console games but its not nearly as bad.

This is a debate that can go on for a very long time but the developers are sick of making games free for 9 out of 10 people and i would be as well.

Wizard do you think the millions of people who pirated crysis and will pirate the upcoming farcry 2 cannot afford the game? yet they run the latest most expensive hardware out. Please if you can afford to pirate a game and have the best hardware you can afford to buy the game.

So wizard out of the millions of people who pirate games, you guys are telling me that 30% of them cannot afford or would not buy the game? rubbish.
I would say 2 in 5 people who pirate can afford to buy the game, why buy it when you have downloaded it before its been released in your country.

I cannot believe that the millions of people who pirate games would not go out and buy it if they had to.

Anyways give it 2 years and you will see only port to pc or just very poor pc games, the era of console is being driven along by the pc game pirates :)

DRM has been repeatedly and unquestionably proven to not stop piracy. Its not even a question. Every single DRM scheme has been cracked before the official release. It is a total failure at stopping piracy. But the publishers persist, why? Because it lets them control the second-hand market.

A common fallacy. PC gaming hasn't diminished like people claim, its the biggest it ever has been. The difference it is and will always remain a niche market where console gaming appeals to a much broader segment. Most console gamers were never PC gamers and never would have been. They are not really the same target market.

well if PC dies then every gamer will buy a console and like slayerza said, then they will be pirated.

in the next five years 90% of games will be online, and then you will need a key to play.

PC gaming won't die, even if 80% pirate it, that 20% that do buy it, is loads of R300's

lets say 1 million ppl play COD5 - but only 20% are legit. that's 200 000 x R300 = R60 000 000.....they make their money - they just moaning cause they could make more.

Yeah it's still stealing though.
No matter how you try to justify your downloads.

If someone steals from you, you'll also be upset.

Most people I know who pirate games play them a few times and then unistall them. They "try out " like 10 games a month, thats between R3000-R5000 a month.
I think that even people with the cash wold only get one new game per month. They way overestimate how many people pirate games, if I play it for a day and then turf it then that is hardly the kind of game that I would pay money for !

PC games are on the decline for other reasons... a lot of the new games are crap and it cost a lot to have a good rig.

Wait till there is large scale piracy on the consoles.... its comimng

The real pirates are the ones who charge R300 to R400 for a PC game!

If games were around R100 you would see very little piracy.

Distribution is a problem as well. People struggle to find the games they want in SA. If they had access to them they would not download them. Downloading in SA is too expensive.

Copyright infringement is not stealing, its copyright infringement. This is getting dull.

Look i don't agree its theft, it only becomes theft when you make a profit from it.

These companies do make enough to survive for sure, i'm just worried about the future of gaming because they are not making what they want and we will soon be forced onto console and charged 700 bucks a game.

:)

I think it's mostly a problem of them not making what we want and thus they don't get their pretty little profit margins.

And people that sell pirated games should be shot.

i dunno hey - piracy has been there since the beginning - I don't see EA or Ubisoft struggeling to make ends meat...?

how many Windows copies are there with Microsoft charging thousands per copy? I don't see bill feeding his children dogfood...

Two words: Volume licensing.

Lets suppose 1 million console gamers play COD5. Console gamers tend to rather buy their games than pirate it, so lets assume 70% of console gamers buy their COD5 legit. That's 700 000 x R600 = R420 000 000. That's 7 times more money than the PC gaming market would bring in.

Also, remember that not the whole R300 goes to the developer. The developer probably ends up with at most around 15% of that R300, which would equate to R60 000 000 * 15% = R9 000 000, while with the console the developer would end up with R420 000 000 * 15% = R63 000 000...

Yup spot on farlig, plus lets not forget i think that 1 million console cod 5 is a bit low.

GTA4 sold over 16 millions copies and it's still going strong. There is nobody in this thread that can tell me when gta4 arrives on pc they will even get close to million copies sold.

Now do the math and you will see why pc games will be a thing of the past.

Stefan the police can do nothing if they find pirate goods on your person, thats up to the developers to take you to civil court, as i said if they catch you selling pirate games they still cannot do anything to you.

Thats nice but dawoo makes billions selling their lanos cars, but make a lot less selling toasters. does this mean it's the end of dawoo toasters because they make less money from it? no, money is still to be made, millions.

it's just a niche market, unlike all the Playstation kids.

People are also pirating millions of copies of XP.. Microsoft seem to be doing very well, and piracy has not killed the software market at all. Microsoft actually prefers people to pirate their product than use the competitors.

I would say.. 6 out of 10 kids (at least) around the world can not afford the games. There are more 3rd world countries than first world, and very few of the worlds population are as financially enabled as you.

You have these massive blinkers on that seem to stop you from looking clearly at how people in the real world live. Thats my opinion.

Have to lol at that. :D:rolleyes:

Keeper the sad thing i don;t believe people would games even at 100 bucks when sit on 24 meg line's and uncapped accounts.

Isn't that exactly the point? Piracy will happen whether publishers like it or not. Victimising the people that buy their games does nothing more than insult us. If someone's going to buy a game, they'll buy it.

Blaming piracy for bad profits is just a pitiful excuse to make up for badly made games that don't interest people.

"True" piracy is when people sell pirated games. Then - and only then - are profits being stolen.

Silly thought just occurred. By reasoning that pirated software/games/whatever are "stealing profits" the same can be said about libraries "stealing" the profits of book publishers/authors.
