Ubuntu 20.04 Release Date & Planned Features (Updated)

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was released on April 23, 2020, succeeding Ubuntu 19.10 as the latest stable release of this hugely popular Linux-based operating system

Six months of blood, sweat and development tears have gone in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (which is codenamed “Focal Fossa”) resulting in a substantial set of improvements that improve just about every part of the OS, from boot speed to app appearance to bundled software.

The many major performance improvements to GNOME Shell, Mutter (the window manager) and other graphics elements can be keenly felt in this release. UI animations and windowing is now more fluid, lighter on memory, and a little less hungry for CPU cycles!

A summary of new Ubuntu 20.04 features:

  • Faster boot speeds
  • OEM logo displayed during boot
  • Improved appearance
  • Dark theme
  • Fractional scaling setting
  • Ships with GNOME 3.36
  • Redesigned login screen

All that plus lots and lots of smaller, less sexy-sounding bug fixes, app updates, and system tweaks.
 
I just wiped clean my windows laptop yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised that a new version had just been released.
 
Shame, poor HTTP servers are struggling, I was downloading at 250KB/s and had to switch over to the torrent.
 
I installed in my macmini 5,3 mid-2011--all good except for the Wifi that keeps disconnecting every 3-5 mins. I will post in another thread the issues. But generally a great upgrade from the previous KDE Ubuntu's..Well done!
 
Running like a dream on my T490.
Only the fingerprint reader does not work out the box but will resolve that with a bit of googling no doubt.

I installed it but once I restart it got stuck on a black screen :unsure:

Create a backup of your server or vm.
Upgrade all installed packages of Ubuntu version 18.04 by running sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade command.
Reboot the Ubuntu Linux system by tying the sudo reboot command
Install the Ubuntu update tool, run: sudo apt install update-manager-core
Start the upgrade procdure, run: sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Reboot the box, run: sudo reboot
Verify upgrades

Thank you :) it’s a seed box environment so nothing really to back up.
Will give this a try as soon as the GF is done watching Plex
