After all the hype I went down to my local FreedomToaster and picked up the latest ubuntu CD. I formatted my entire pc and did a fresh install, but after about 5-15 minutes the entire thing freezes, keyboard + mouse have no effect.
I did the updates once but didn't help.

Has any1 else had this problem?

Never had this problem... does windows run on the machine fine? if not then your PC probably is on it's last legs.

I had been using hardy fine and dual booting with xp, i decided to just drop xp all together but now i have had to format again and allocated some to xp and jaunty but it keeps freezes. I have re-installed ubuntu like 3 times and nothing helps...it looks so cool, im bumbed

Post your specs...

also run the memory test from grub or the live cd.

Are you 100% sure the disc burned properly? Which disc are you using (live, alternate) ? Are you installing from the Live environment? Have you tried the OEM install option?

i have done some research apparently a problem with intel cards https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JauntyJackalope/ReleaseNotes#Display freezes with Intel graphics cards
.
disc is fine already checked for errors.

will see if the work around helps when i get home and post results.

That only seems to apply to an already-installed system. I have a PC running 9.04 with Intel GMA950 (945 chipset graphics) and haven't had any issues. I also know 3 other people running Jaunty on 945 chipset with no issues.

Any other hardware information that might be pertinent?

okay, i forgot the specs at home:(
I re-installed gutsy and it worked fine, so its either a problem with jaunty all together but i'm going to go back to the Toaster and try again.
will keep updates

The same thing also happens with nVidia cards.. mine freezes every now and then.. Stops if i deactivate the graphics drivers.

The problem might be related to the new Xorg 1.6 server.

Is Compiz enabled or disabled?

Hardware specs would be usefull here.

AMD 64 2800 1800mhz.
512 ddr400 ram.
AMD K8 chipset.

so last night I again ran a memory test( completed it this time) and passed fine.
I checked my installation for errors and fine and tried to fix broken packaged(none)

all of this worked fine.
I then logged back into Ubuntu and Murphys law it worked fine.
did all updates and never froze once. left some downloads going on throughout the day today and hopefully it will still be fine once work finishes but it looks to be resolved.

so strange and agravating:(
my caps lock and scroll lock were flashing when it froze if that means anything:/

anyway thanks for the responses but hopefully the problems resolved:)

Been there. Had the issue. Right down to the flashing lock buttons. Turns out it's an issue with AMD Cool 'n Quiet. I guess it's not fixed yet. Disable it in power manager, and it's fine.
