Ok iv been running ubuntu for 4 weeks now. I need some tips on a few things.

1 I installed klamAV and firestarter are they good forantivirus and firewall?

2 I want to make it look nice, i tried mac=king it look like mac but it seems the tuts out there are for previous versions so i cant get it to work... Can anyone here help me make ubuntu 9.04 look impressive:D

3 I need to install novell to be able to access my school network is this posiible,if so can someone help me ?

for some eyecandy search the repo for "avant" and install all the extras.. nice osx like dock.

there is also cairo dock which has a few more options but avant just feels more stable to me.

you will be using the "terminal" allot, so I'll advise you the either "sudo apt-get install yakuake" or install "yakuake" from the synaptic packet manager and then add it to your start-up programs, what yakuake is, is a terminal client that opens up when you press "f12".
for music I will advise amarok, and then internet wise I prefer opera. But if you want the whole "media center" experience then I'll advise XBMC. For the editing of images Gimp could prove quite powerfull, to the degree where it matches Photoshop. Avant is a relatively nice dock, and if you want to get down and dirty with the skinning of your OS, I'll advise you to visit "www.gnome-look.org".
If you require any more "specific" or in "detail" help feel free to PM me.
and welcome to the funner, more efficient way of computing

If you looking to make your ubuntu look and behave like Mac then I suggest have a look at Mac4Lin project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin).

To get total control over your compiz effects, get "compizconfig-settings-manager" or just search for compizconfig in the package manager (Synaptic).

Screenlets has some nice desktop widgets. Look for "screenlets" in package manager.

As Aqua_lung mentioned, get "avant-window-navigator" from package manager, and be sure to download all the plugins, they sure come handy.

and like <moLe> said, to get a totally custom look head on to www.gnome-look.org and try to mix n match different window borders, control schemes, icons, cursors etc...

As for the Antivirus, do we actually need one when running linux? Maybe if you are hosting files and dont wanna have other people download infected files from your server. Firestarter is good for firewall, has a nice front-end and easy to open ports, create rules, etc so its good :)

Welcome to Linux :)

For one, if you really want it to look impressive, then install Compiz, and then also install Emerald.

Emerald will let you set Compiz themes, which is way better than GDM. Though this is for the window borders. You'll still use GDM themes for the windows and buttons etc. For that you just use Gnomes built in Theme Manager.

1. To install Compiz click here.

2. To install Emerald just open Terminal and then type sudo apt-get install emerald

3. Once all that is installed, download a Compiz theme from here.

4. Open Emerald from System -> Preferences - Emerald Theme Manager

5. Import the theme you have downloaded.

6. Press Alt+F2, then type emerald --replace

7. Open "CompizConfig Setting Manager" from System -> Preferences

8. Navigate to "Window Decoration" and click it.

9. In the box with the "Command" label infront of it, copy that line and save it in a text file as a backup. If you want to revert to GDM themes later.

10. Clear the box and type in emerald --replace (That will load the Compiz Fusion themes when the PC boots into Linux.)

You can then go out of it, and set all the other settings in Compiz to get your Ubuntu Desktop to behave as you want.

I just finished configuring mine yesterday. Will upload pic to show you what the Compiz themes can do.

If you want your Ubuntu to have the menus in the top bar, like Apples Mac has, then install the Global Menu applet.. here's how.

If you want to change the splash screen Ubuntu uses to start up, the Usplash, with the progress bar on, then follow this guide.

And to change your Login screen, check this out.

Maybe try Opera. Strange though. Slow as in browsing, or slow as in running it?

The Novell client is not available for Linux if you don't buy it.... only the Windows is free.

lol dude.. that's not a theme I made, that's to show what you can accomplish with Compiz and the Mac skins available. To install the dock, just type; sudo apt-get install awn-manager in Terminal.
