Is there a problem with copy and paste in general or is there something wrong with my installation? If I copy from an application then close that app whatever it was I copied seems to vanish from the clipboard.

I'm using the Netbook version of 9.04 on a AAO

There's probably some obscure sudo apt-get command to sort your problem out :P

Have they broken the select and middle mouse button paste ?

there is a kde program called klipper which i think would solve your problems. don't know what the gnome equivalent is.

what's all this ctrl c and v stuff, if you select the text it's automatically put in clipboard, when you want to paste just press middle button (scroll wheel)

ctrl+c ,ctrl+v has not failed me yet, running Kubuntu.

But maybe try and see if you can find 'Parcellite' in the repos?

"Parcellite is a stripped down, basic-features-only clipboard manager with a small memory footprint for those who like simplicity."

believe it or not, some of us still use the keyboard to navigate

Hmm simple thing like copy and paste still giving problems? How disappointing. :(

Ok, I can understand that. Was assuming being in a window manager that the mouse was needed :P
I'd be quite pissed of if ctrl chording was broken also but it's no real train smash when there's alternative faster methods.

if you have a grasp of keyboard shortcuts it is much quicker to use them than to actually move your hand away from the keyboard, use mouse and get back to keyboard.

yeah sure, and it's also quicker to use Vim if you have the patience to practice it.

My netbook's trackpad is lousy and there's no scroll wheel either. ;)

Anyhow it makes little difference if the clipboard contents are dumped when the app you copied from is closed.

how is it quicker to quit a program using shift+; and then q then enter as opposed to say alt+f4?

whatever it is, it is surely not standard nor best practice. i

I don't actually recall ctrl +C / V ever being consistent across linux apps. especially noticeable to or from a terminal window.

There was a way to emulate the middle button by pressing left and right together, been ages since I needed that so don't ask details how to get X setup for it.

But yes, it's definately not best practice.
