Ubuntu drops Gnome, implements Unity

Well it can`t be all that bad. With my Ubuntu I always install KDE and xfce anyway, now i`ll just have to add Gnome to the list.
And who knows maybe Unity turns out to be uber fancy

Haven't used Unity before, I hope it is not as bad as you make it out to be, will probably know more next year April.

I started a thread about it in the Linux sub forum, titled "I hate Apple", obviously.

So long as they don't force the install of anything, I'm good. Although maybe gnome could do with a facelift, and what not, I have everything exactly how I want it. I don't want to have to upgrade and find that I must then do some patch work to put everything back to how I like it

That's one of the problems I have with the Ubuntu upgrade schedule; just as you get everything the way you like it, BAM, everything changes. It's fine for an enthusiast, but not for work.

The reason I switched to Ubuntu was to work on a dev environment closer to our hosted server solution(LAMP)... and Netbeans(+xdebug for PHP) run really well on it, unlike on Windows where NB 6.9 seems to have a nasty memory leak... another nasty since the 10.10 release is that Evolution's MS Exchange plugin has gone really clunky, even after the 'proposed' patch/update... it remains unreliable/semi-unusable... other than the issues mentioned I like it... I really like using terminal for SSH... but I guess Putty on Windows does the job too!

Gnome only have themselves to blame, its a solid desktop, but the "look and feel", ie, the interface for gnome feels like it was done by a 400 year old leper with no eye-site.

Frankly I cant wait to see if Ubuntu can make a better interface.

What devs in FOSS land have still not realized is.. that no one wants to use their product unless they get a designer to give it style.

In this sense I think it is a good thing. But it does not sound as if canonical is going to share this development with the rest as they want something to distinguish them from the other distros. This part sounds very bad to me. Rather share it, as the development pace will be a lot faster.

Cheer up lintard, I tried 10.04 this year and it was good. I look forward to trying this new one one next year.
I mostly use it on older PCs that I run BOINC on so I tend to go for Xubuntu.

Im positive about the unity switch though, they are thinking outside the box, not just creating another windows clone and I like that.

It would be nice if the compiz, etc. effects are still incorporated, but I believe it will, Canonical has always made the best choices when required to. Lets hope it doesn't turn into a KDE look alike because lets face it, Ubuntu's mission is a replacement for the desktop for windows users, and that's more to KDE's side, no effence to KDE, just diffenet styles But I am going to miss Gnome
