Now Canonical and Shuttleworth have to make a Linux distribution that *ACTUALLY* meets expectations. Ubuntu 9.10 is almost a complete Lemon, and the UNR edition doesnt work on the mainstream netbooks.
If thats the benchmark.. the uTunes store wont work after you apply an update.

Not holding my breath tbh. I doubt they will get any major artists or labels onboard.

UNR is awesome on my netbook and I have 2 Windows users that are so happy I installed it on theirs.
I have zero issues with 9.10 on both my work & home PC

If anything, they'll be offering OGG and FLAC downloads before anything else - Ubuntu ships without those prop. codecs installed, so it makes sense to assume the music store will follow the same route.
That being said, is an online music service really worth it? I'd rather see them put more effort towards broader compatibility and hardware support first.

load it on a MSI Wind Netbook or Samsung NC10 ... or an Acer Aspire Laptop. UNR Desktop switcher was removed from 9.04 (due to an aparent instability) and that new simplified menu does not float my boat.
I really like ubuntu... 9.04 UNR was awesome on my MSI Wind machine...
9.10 has faulty USB code which renders the Camera useless, there is screen flicker and the internal microphone doesnt work.. and 9.10 is an UPGRADE!
You will see why windows is the market leader.
I think Shuttleman should concentrate on completing one thing before moving on to new pastures.

Loaded it already on 3 different Aspire One models and cannot find fault.
Number one reason why netbook users prefer WindowsXP (note XP and not Windows7) is that they are comfortable with the existing interface. Has nothing to do with the OS and its features.
I no longer preach what OS to select. Stick with what you know. The best performing OS is the one you understand.
You can also not blame poor hardware choice by the vendor for your OS lack of performance. Some hardware is cr@p regardless of what platform you choice to run.

The flicker is fixed with a bios upgrade and usb problems are fixed with the new kernel in the updates. You can find details on launchpad.
Dont get me wrong.. I support the ubuntu project... my point is that every
release has REGRESSIONS of BASIC functionality, and everytime a new kernel gets applied, it throws away my custom kernel modules.
I would rather Shuttleworth focus energy on BEATING Windows, Not competing with iTunes!

:erm: Maybe thats one and the same thing? First question on trying ubuntu is usually "How do I install iTunes?".
Canonical are going to look pretty daft if they release a music store without fixing the pulseaudio and alsa regressions that have plagued 9.10. The platform also doesn't have a solution for storing music except lumping everything into one big folder. One would think there would be an automatic database and ability to lock down ones own collection by now. Chances are still big that you will lose data playing around with the any one of the many mp3 players out there and rythmnbox still looks crap compared to banshee and songbird. Now we get to purchase tunes. I too hope its not a sign we going down the DRM route.

i'm a bit skeptical on this one...
the only way to get into the market is to have a massive existing user base which can give you bargaining power against the record labels. or use an existing service.
but seeing as amazon isn't available locally, i don't see what the point is if they aren't really adding value to anything that already exists. who cares if ubuntu launches a music store which is only available in the us and uk?

WRT the AAO with UNR: I've loaded it onto three machines with zero problems each time.

given wogan's point re the codecs, it will be interesting how they manage the drm issue.

Before the latest UNR I use to use my AAO once a month (if that). I know use it more than my desktop at home. Even my illiterate wife loves it.

1. The music store will be in ubuntu.
2. pulseaudio works fine for most users I havent had a pulse crash since intrepid.
3. There will be no DRM.

5. They are using an existing service (I dont think anyone thought it was going to be apple)
6. Because it will be connected to an existing service Major labels will be on board.
7. The store will more than likely only offer Mp3s but it depends on the partner who Canonical choose
