Ubuntu Ocelot takes shape

doesn't sound like much to announce for an upgrade

What happened to wayland? I thought it was on the roadmap for the 11.10 release.

Picture is in very poor taste IMHO. The image has nothing to do with the article (bar some lewd interpretation).

It's about taking shape. I believe it's meant to give a few guys quick smiles, nothing serious!

I gave Ubuntu 11.04 a try. I didn't really feel at home with Unity - not to mention the atrocious AMD/ATI driver support - everything was choppy.

I decided to give Gnome 3.0 a try - and installed Fedora 15. Loving it. I believe Gnome 3 currently is the better window manager, so I'm curious what will happen with Unity after a few refinements.

Well my biggest problem with Unity was the lack of access to my software using mouse clicks only.

Sure it works for the 5 applications you have on the bar, but the 2 click and see if something was installed was missing. Maybe I am old-school, but I like to know whats installed on my system without trying to hunt things down or type every applications name, anyway I moved on to Kubuntu about 2 releases ago.

Not the first time we see Linux being sold this way. I suspect it's an acknowledgement it's not a mainstream product and appeals mostly to a target audience that tends to have those kinds of pictures as a desktop....

Can it natively execute win32s applications?

The correct answer is no! But you can install WINE(Windows Emulator) and run many win32 apps through it... but but but some applications run great, some require a bit of tweaking in the WINE config, and some are just plain clunky. I run Photoshop CS3 via WINE on Ubuntu, and although there are menu rendering issues, I can do a few tasks in it!

Personally I haven't found Unity user friendly. For some reason I can't add NetBeans IDE to the 'quick-launch' icons, must be because it's a java app. Some apps rely on the GNOME top panel, they place an icon there, so you can access the config settings, like DavMail. I use DavMail in conjunction with Thunderbird to access my MSExchange based mail. I don't like Evolution mail, it's buggy and crashes way too often! Unity doesn't allow icons to be placed in the top panel. Accessing applications quickly is a pain... to many clicks!

I reverted back GNOME 2(Ubuntu Classic). If you ask me Unity is better for a mobile device like a cell phone, not a desktop! Hopefully the new release will improve it dramatically!
