Hey guys

I need some help
I'm running a wireless network too all my friends and now got us a internet line but there is a prob I need to monitor them and set them to limited internet bandwidth but not network bandwidth ore at least monitor how match they use

If its possible I would like to monitor them by IP

Another ting I want to make dedicated ip's so that only the ip I add to my server would be allowed to use my network

I would like to run this in ubuntu server ore any other Linux os
If this is not possible ore not that easy to do then ill do it in Windows server 2003 enterprise

I am runing Squid as my proxy server.
I am new at this so step by step guide would be appreciated.

Does each user have a static IP? If so...

Lightsquid uses the squid log file to check how much each user uses. I have been using it for a while, and its fast and efficient. The only problem is that it doesn't include traffic that doesn't get logged by squid, eg. torrents and newsgroups.

You can also use BWstat, its uses a database backend, and if memory serves me correctly, it includes all traffic types as it implements libpcap.
 
Everyone uses auto obtain ip’s (obtain an ip address automatically) that gives them a ip range of 10.0.0.3-10.0.0.254 (my routers ip range)
So if you set your tcp/ip to auto(obtain an ip address automatically) any one can use my internet and the ftp server
But that’s not what I want
I would like to give them a ip, that I add to my server, that gives them permission to use my internet and my ftp server
So if they set there tcp/ip to “obtain an ip address automatically” they won’t have access to my network
 
What you can do is then install DHCP on your squid server, use a text file of MAC addresses that you want to allow access to the network, and bind their MAC to an IP in the DHCP config. You would have to get a normal AP then or flash yours as an AP, because your router sits at the edge of your network, while the AP should be before the Squid/DHCP server.
 
Having squid between the box sharing the internet and the users will hide the user's ips and make it more difficult to track them.

Untangle is opensource and a great way to monitor the BW of each user, only problem is, it will have to sit between your users and the adsl router will have to make a connection to the internet. Other than that it will do exactly what you want out of the box.

Try a streamlined product before you try setting things up manually, then at least you have something you can reverse engineer to see how it was setup before you do it manually, at least this is my advice.

I am using 1 pc as my server with 2 gbit lan cards in it
1: my internet router
2: my clients “friends”

So the pc is my proxy and ftp server all in one.
Ore at least that is what I’m trying to do.

Could u be more specific "AP"?
 
You could try Chillispot with freeRadius. This will give you the same kind of system as what hotspots use. You could give "unlimited" access, or limit it to 300MB, or even the speed based on username.
 
Lets get back to the main topic

Server specs

1x mother board
1x cpu core 2 duo 2.6
2x 1gb ddr2 800 ram
1x 1tb hdd (for file sharing)
1x 80gb hdd ( For server OS)
2x gbit lan card (1 For my dsl router, 1 fore the switch)

Hear is what I need to do with the server

1 FTP server
2 proxy server


FTP server

1 I need to give my friends access to the server using there own user name and password
2 I need the ability to add more users later on
3 The users need to have access to upload files and download files (copy) but not delete files

Proxy server

I what to give them internet but need to set them a limit internet bandwidth
(e.g. Janie Ip 192.168.0.3 =1gb cap
Pietie Ip 192.168.0.4= 2gb cap
If this is possible

Still I need to monitor them VIA ip
(e.g. IP 192.168.0.3 – Janie = 238mb already use)

The monitoring system should only monitor internet bandwidth and not bandwidth to or from my ftp server.

I do not want my friends pc to auto configure its ip
I want to add a user by ip, that has access to my server and internet.

Sorry, i'm using a pfsense box to split my network.

edit: Well done!! See Linux is not all that difficult. Now try the same on MS... :D
