If I connect using this ubiquitie equipment will the pc's be able to pick each other up as being on the same LAN?

In other words I wont need like a VPN or proxy or something like that. will they both be on the same subnet etc?

Can I use my router at home as a dhcp server?

That to me is the benefit of these guys, I'm also running really "child's toy" type Senao's to connect my dad's place to me. He can create PPPOE connections etc - it's a complete cable replacement effectively; Whatever is possible on cable, this network can do.

On the link to my brother it's using Mikrotik. Basic networking works, but others don't (ala PPPOE) - sure it's most likely just a setup issue, or some such.

Just highlighting the strength of the two. In the end of the day the Mikrotik is the more "industrial" of the two if you wish.

That to me is a huge must have. I dont want to struggle each time I want to use a different protocol/application. I want it to be just as if his pc was plugged in to my router at home.

What do I ask miro for? Must I say I'm looking for ubiquitie? Does that refer to the type of software on the board or is that a brand name?

And do I just buy 2x of the same stuff or do I need something different like server/client equipment?

Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

I would still recommend you connect to PTAWUG
So much more, so much better
With the RB433 you can connect to PTAWUG and then just broadcast to your buddy, thus you will have your 'own' networkie as well as access to PTAWUG.

I am willing to pay someone to set it up for me but apparently nobody will do that. You can call me lazy if you want. I don't have a clue how any of this stuff works.

simply read http://www.ptawug.co.za/content_list_11
there are the instructions, photos, diagrams, screenshots, etc. as long as you read, it is simple. 600+ users have followed that guide and successfully connected.

It's really easy, except if you have a physical disability like one of our users that is in wheelchair, we helped him install the kit on his roof.

But can it still do what carudden said and replace a wired lan connection?

From what it sounds like you have to mess around with routes and the like to get ports forwared to my pc and his etc.

well, just one route to add on your PC, will take you about 20 seconds.
route -p add 172.16.0.0 MASK 255.240.0.0 RB_LAN_IP

easy peasy

then it will be like a LAN between the two of you

Well, looks like I dont have any LOS to the wug highsites, but my friend might.

If he sets up a wug antennae on his roof, will I be able to buy any equipment to be able to connect to him as well?

If you have los to him, and he sets up another radio on his RB433, yeah, you can connect to him, and access the WUG.

a RB433 can take 3x mini pci radio cards
each radio card is attached to one antenna
each antenna can either be used as client mode (to connect to another site) or as AP mode, to broadcast signal

What about this? Can I use that to connect the two houses together?

I know it's not as full featured as the RB433 but I really only need it for one purpose - to connect the two sites. Connecting to the wug is absolutely OPTIONAL for me, it really doesn't matter to me.
