Hi all

I'm sorry if this has been asked before and I'm certain that it has but I really dont know the terminology so it's a bit hard for me :D

Basically I would like to connect my pc in my house to my friends pc in his house. The two houses are about < 1km apart and the connection will only be used between us two.

Is this possible and can someone pls advise on what equipment I'm gonna need.

Again I apologize as this is probably been asked a million times.

Thanks in advance.

or just connect both of you to PTAWUG, why do you want only 2 people on a small network if you can be on a free network with 650 people connected, and also access JHB.

Get two grids and two Ubiquiti's.

Where do I get these? I want to be sure that I buy the right stuff. Could you pls give me a link if possible.

Is one a client and the other a server or are both sites going to have the same equipment?

Because theres no line of sight to wug and I dont want to depend on another tower for connectivity.

And the problem I have is that I have to purchase the equipment and then what happens if there is no possible connection. Then I'm stuck with +-R2000 of equipment.

And theres a fair amount of tall buildings surrounding me

no.

Please read : http://www.ptawug.co.za/content_list_11 - Section 2

2. LOS picture and signal tests

1. If you are not sure that you have line of sight to a highsite - get on your roof and take HIGH RESOLUTION pictures in every direction, then upload the pictures on www.wug.za.net's under your node's (location's) settings.
2. Then connect on IRC and post the link to your node's pictures - the guys on IRC can help you check if you will be able to see the highsite. If you can physically see the highsite you are sorted. Check the Highsite Locations page for info about what to look for to spot the highsites.
3. There is mobile LOS test equipment available to do signal tests at persons wanting to connect but have not bought kit yet, and you can organise on IRC with one of the current members to come to your location and check if they can establish a connection with the highsite using the dedicated test equipment.
4. To organise a signal test please send a mail with your details to ptawug@gmail.com - it will be forwarded to the tester for the area you are in, he will contact you to set a time and date for the test. Signal tests are free of charge, wuggers take turns to keep the test kits and test signal at interested persons. Please include your address, cell number, node name on wug.za.net and the highsites that you have theoretical line of sight to, in the email.
5. Please note that a signal test will not be done if you have not taken pictures from your roof and uploaded them to the gallery. The reason for this is that some people have CLEAR line of sight to highsites, can see the antennas with their bare eyes, to do a test is a waste of time as a connection will be easily possible.
6. Please connect and stay on IRC for quick feedback and response from the signal testers after you have made direct contact with them on email.

If you don't go WUG... www.miro.co.za has the Ubiquities. For setup and leave, you'll probably be happier than going the whole Mikrotik route ;)

I've never asked - I'm sure if they don't they could put in touch with someone who could. Ubiquiti uses a very simple point and click type setup. Mount a bracket as high as possible, and line them up.

As with any wireless setup, the first step is to get on your roof and see if you have LOS.

Yes, the Ubiquiti is the wireless radio and board.
