Unable to insert discs into superdrive after uninstalling VirtualBox

Superdrive was fine, until I uninstalled VirtualBox.
Now, when I try insert a disc, it gets about 3/4 in, then there is resistance.


If I go to system profile & select "disc burning", I can here a quick sound in the drive & then it accepts the disc.
After ejecting the disc I have to go through the same process again to insert another.
Restarts don't change the situation, nor does SMC or PRAM resets.

Any ideas how to sort this out ?

Standard problem with SuperDrives when they get old. It is quite possible the eject mechanism that is stuck.

they are flakey at best.

odd thing is it was working perfectly while i was using virtualbox, as soon as i was done with virtualbox, i uninstalled it - and that was the end of the superdrive at the same time.

I'd go with this - how old is the computer?

Now might be the perfect time to rid yourself of the optical drive and replace it with an SSD/HDD. A fusion drive could be in your future.

i have to say, every single mac laptop i have ever owned has had superdrive problems

I've only had problems with my ageing mini which is surprising considering how much my laptops get abused.

Mine started doing the same. Luckily we have an external DVD writer.

It is a mechanical error preventing the inserting of the disk. Diagnostics won't pick it up

it does irk me somewhat tho.

i very seldom use discs, and burn even fewer.
this machine has probably burnt 20 discs in it's life - if that !

I had the same on Cider (a VB fork for games). Try shutting down then power up while holding the Eject button down - you may hear the mechanism moving.

I have yet to solve this - a reinstall of OS from scratch was about all that worked. And even then, I am not sure - since I generally don't use that drive.

i have tried that, as with clicking on "disk burning" within system profile, the drive accepts & reads a disc, but as soon as the disc is ejected, it's a case of rinse & repeat
