Hi, All

Does anyone know where I can get a reliable uncapped service, that's really cheap (say, sub R100 per month)? My wife's mother needs a PC and Internet, which she'll use (at first) for e-mail and really basic web surfing. Because of this, and because she's all alone, I think 64k would be plenty fast enough for her. I'm going to be installing Ubuntu 10.04 for her, and as you know Ubuntu delivers a lot of updates, so I'd feel much more comfortable if her connection were uncapped.

She is unemployed, and runs a little shop selling miscellaneous habby stuff just to survive, so she's not going to be able to afford it and I'm going to have to subsidise (hence why I need it cheap). :P Her shop has a website and she sells custom made stuff direct to order from time to time, so she really needs e-mail--currently we check her e-mail from time to time and print/fax e-mails to her when she gets them. This really isn't ideal, hence the need for e-mail. She'll probably get addicted to Wikipedia really fast, as she's a knowledge addict. ;) Other than that, I don't think she'll do much surfing... well, maybe in a few months once she gets comfortable with the technology, she might get a Facebook profile, and chat with my wife on IRC, but that's about it.

Can anyone suggest a decent Internet option for her?

Thanks
Graham

P.S. If anyone would like to have a look at her website, it's at http://www.haaihoei.za.net/. I developed it and am hosting it for her for free.</shameless plug> ;)

What about the 1gb ADSL offerings? I know SAOL has 1Gb bandwidth PLUS the ADSL line rental for +- R140? I'm sure the other ISP's offer something similar...

edit: Would 1Gb be enough for those Linux updates and her other usage?

Ag, I'm just being paranoid. 1Gb should be more than enough for her regular usage. If I'm really concerned about all those updates, we can just switch off automatic updates and (if she wants) she can do them herself once a month. I suppose it's not really necessary for her to have uncapped--although I of course would prefer if it was.

As I say, it can be really slow (OK, no slower than 56k) as long as it's uncapped as she pays a flat fee (i.e. no analogue dial-up). :P

I was thinking about iBurst, where if you exceed your monthly cap they throttle you down to 64kbps. I figured that paying a really low amount per month (for the cheapest option, 40MB cap or something) would be really cool. She'd hit her 40MB pretty quick, but then she effectively had 64k uncapped for less than R100 per month. But then I discovered that (a) that throttling thing only applies to the higher caps, and (b) there's no coverage in Wellington. ;)
