Uncapped local ADSL trial to end

“The decision to provide a quota of free local-only ADSL bandwidth will bring MWEB in line with the rest of the market. During the MWEB Trial programme, it emerged that some 95% of MWEB customers were only using about 2GB of free local-only ADSL bandwidth per month,” said MWEB.

That's funny. It does seem like some kind of sick April Fool's joke. If your average user was utilising only 2GB why would you then introduce a cap?

They try to justify their overpricing with "we have spam protection and an online encyclopedia" - well I can also get those things for FREE without MWeb. It's called GMail and Wikipedia.

:D

This is good news - finally those mweb chops will stop hogging and clogging the local download sources...

Yea wonder what the guys pulling 700-1tb a month are going to do shame, maybe if they had not abused the system they would not have ended it.

No worries though, im pretty sure Mweb is going to get steamrolled by the bigger players before the end of 2010.

Because of the other 5% that uses 200 gigs + a month. Mweb just want to get rid of all their unprofitable customers.

I know it sucks but lets be realistic. The only ISP that can offer a free uncapped local service is Telkom. They own the infrastructure. All other ISP's buy from them, incl Mweb.

I was under the impression that local was to be uncapped all round ??

Charging once a cap is reached is not uncapped !!

Was going to ask the same thing...

There's always that...

Last night I heard that there is a ISP that charges something like R300/year for unlimited local only. Could that be true?

the kind of news to help u quickly snap out of April Fool's mode...

I was also thinking of signing up with them but they can shove it now :(

Is there no petition that we all can sign for :D

Ya, when you do the maths its understandable why it isn't sustainable. At SAIX's wholesale rate of ~ R10 per Gig local only, a user consuming 700GB pm will cost an ISP R7000 pm to service.

So, all b*tching aside, what's the next best deal for as much local cap with the lowest cost? Moaning isn't going to solve this, lets just move to the next ISP with the best offering and hopefully with a surge in whichever specific product, they'll drop the price even further to attract more clients.

So, Openweb? Web Africa? Telkom?

Have to say to me it seems like telkom - they give you 1.5x the international as well as 10gb local for every 1gb international.
