so it will be an underDoC cable

heh.... trust dominic to come up with an answer like that...

Haven't napalmed their offices yet have you dominic? :p

I think I recall reading somewhere that all of Seacom's capacity has been bought already - I daresay they have the industry's support.

It's to keep Chancellor House in the green.

Nice,

I recall an article of Neotel gaining complete governance on the current cable. And now apparantly Telkom still has governance ???

Sometime i really dont understand the news posts here on mybroadband.

Every monday theres a topic on cheaper broadband, everey telco gets bashed on tuesday and the daily Telkom flame reaches a new high..

You know theres a hell of a lot more going on in the broadband/IT world atm. Like the Aussies that recently developed a $10,- 5Gbps Wifi chip....

Oh and youre seriously mistaken if you think that SEACOM is gonna give us all uncapped 4mbit! The majority of their BW has already been bought by the big bussiness players like AT&Tand Verizon. As international companies pay more and complain less than your average consumer.

so..... where's the battle? Oh wait - there ain't a battle.

I look forward to another version of this article again in few weeks time

Maybe someone could enlighten me - where is the actual document (not just speech) that states that undersea cables must be majority SA/African owned? If there is some legislation or policy document, has it gone through the proper consultation process demanded by our Constitution? Or has the minister arbitary rights in this regard given to her by some or other law?

a very good question

the matter was discussed at a briefing of the portfolio committee on communications on 19 Feb where the DoC indicated it was going to publish policy guidelines for public comment (they are apparently ready for publication)

these guidelines are to be published in terms of chapter 4 of the ECA which deals with "Rapid Deployment of Electronic Communications Facilities"

as with most things the DoC touches this is a very problemmatic approach which even the ANC members of the portfolio committee had problems with

oh = "local" means "African"

why is the Minister involved: because apparently issuing of landing rights has security implications

other highlights:
- "even if you publish them tomorrow they will have no force and effect"
- "if the DoC does not provide a proper presentation on the relevant issues then they need to be held accountable not humoured. The DoC is undermining the Committee."

fun fun fun

ooo... so there are rifts showing...

*gets popcorn and waits for the show*

ok does anyone else see a similarity between the sat 3 capacity and the electricity capacity? i mean electrics they use and use but dont build anything new. then we run out and suddenly its an issue and now theres new plants going up everywhere by the sounds of it.

bandwidth, they use and use and dont build new cables. i mean im terribly sorry but telkom couldve used some of their 4+ billion rand profit from one year to drop another seacom type cable in for themselves and they woulda been laughing.

guess thats not the way its done though. gotta wait till theres a crisis before we can do anything. ffs it really gets to me. theres an old saying that goes

a lack of planning on your part does not mean a crisis on my part.

sort this **** out before everyone with the skill to brush their teeth leaves this country.

/end rant
