Rhodes Must Fall exhibition vandalised in UCT protest

The Rhodes Must Fall Exhibition, “Echoing Voices from Within” was disrupted yesterday by members of the University of Cape Town's Trans Collective, a student led organisation that prioritises the rights of transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex students at the University of Cape Town.

Students smeared photographs with red paint and blocked the entrances to the Centre for African Studies Gallery with their painted naked bodies. The exhibition was shut down.

Trans Collective complained that only three out of more than 1,000 images that ended up making it onto the exhibition roll featured a trans person’s face.

Chaos as Stellenbosch workers strike

Cape Town - Stellenbosch University students begged doormen to allow them into the Neelsie student centre on Friday, where all entrances were locked after workers trashed parts of the building and turned over dustbins.

Scores of security guards dressed in riot gear and carrying glass shields stood in front of the entrances to many campus buildings.

Although police vans and police armoured vehicles patrolled the campus streets, their presence was not nearly as strong as during the #FeesMustFall protests at the end of last year.

The three-storey student centre, which hosts banks, fast food shops, coffee shops, a supermarket, the SRC, the radio station Matie FM and student newspaper Die Matie, was closed from 10.30am after the workers’ protest.

The workers, who have been on strike since Wednesday, demanded permanent employment by the university so they could earn more and get benefits, including medical aid and pension.

They are employed by an independent company subcontracted by the university.

Strikers are also suspected of committing arson which gutted one of the basement offices in the administration building on Thursday night, according to university spokesman Martin Viljoen.

Stellenbosch police are investigating charges of arson and malicious damage to property, Viljoen said, adding that a student’s car was also set alight.

One student, who gave her name only as Danielle, could be seen knocking on the Neelsie doors on Friday and pleading to be allowed in to draw money she said she needed for food.

She eventually burst into tears.

I don't get what the problem is. 3 pictures were worthy of the exhibition. The rest weren't.. These guys are acting like the pictures were deliberately excluded because they had trans people in them. How were they even supposed to know which people are or aren't trans.
 
TUT & UP SRC leaders hopeful lectures will resume peacefully

JOHANNESBURG – Student leaders from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the University of Pretoria (UP) say they hope lectures will resume peacefully next week.

Student Representative Council (SRC) presidents from both campuses say no protest action is expected when the new starts again on Monday.

Earlier this year, students and staff took a stand over several issues, including language policies and outsourcing.

SRC presidents from the institutions say the atmosphere on their campuses remains calm.

PRETORIA – Vusi Mahlangu (33) has been arrested by the Hawks in Eastern Cape for perjury and defeating the ends of justice on Tuesday.

Mahlangu, who was allegedly kidnapped in Mthatha on 29 March 2016, was in company of his lawyers when he visited the Hawks offices in East London to submit an affidavit which detailed his version of events surrounding his abduction and ultimate release to safety.

He was however arrested as his statement contradicted statements from witnesses and evidence collected by the task team which was responsible for investigating the alleged kidnapping.

Mahlangu is expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (today).

Shack protest at Maties

Cape Town - Protesting students and security guards at Stellenbosch University clashed on Monday after a shack that had been erected on university property was demolished.

A group who call themselves The Concerned Students took responsibility for placing the shack on the university’s Rooiplein (Red Square), next to a statue of Jan Marais.

Gcobisa Yani, a spokeswoman for the group, said the students were concerned about 150 workers who had been dismissed following protests to end outsourcing last year.
