TUT Shoshanguve campus shut down

Johannesburg – The Tshwane University of Technology has shut down its Soshanguve campus until next month due to the ongoing disruption of lectures.

Vice-Chancellor and Lourens van Staden students were instructed to vacate residences by Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, despite discussions between management, workers the student representative council, and agreements reached, as well as a court interdict that is still in force, a small group of people are continuing to disrupt classes at the Soshanguve campuses. It must be noted that a number of people who are causing this disruptions are in fact not registered TUT students,” Van Staden said on Monday.

Students removed from TUT, says movement

Durban – The forced removal of students at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) late on Monday night was unacceptable, an Outsourcing Must Fall movement official has said.

Spokesperson Vusi Mahlangu on Monday told News24 that students were being forcibly removed by armed security.

“It is absolute chaos. There has been damage to property and it is quite frankly a bad situation at the moment. We condemn the attacking of students in the middle of the night and call the closing of the campus by management childish. They always resort to closing the campus,” said Mahlangu.

The university earlier on Monday announced it would close down its Soshanguve campuses following a spate of protests.

University spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, had previously said that despite discussions between management, the Central Student Representative Council (CSRC), Local Student Representative Council (LSRC) and the agreements reached, as well as an interdict that was still in force, a small group of people continued to disrupt activities at the Soshanguve campuses.

The students have been protesting and demanding that university management resolve the issue of financial exclusion among other issues.

DUT protest: security officers fired

Cape Town - More than 20 security officers contracted to the Durban University of Technology have been dismissed after ongoing #OutsourcingMustFall protests.

These officers, together with suspended cleaning staff, gathered at the university’s Steve Biko campus on Monday after receiving notice of their dismissal via SMS last week.

The security officers were employed by Pietermaritzburg-based Mi7 Security Intelligence, which had been awarded a five-year contract to provide security services at all the DUT’s campuses since 2014.

The #OutsourcingMustFall movement calls for support staff, usually security and cleaning staff at public education institutions, to be directly employed by the universities instead of hired by private companies contracted to the institutions.

The movement has swept the country, with protests erupting at the University of Cape Town, Tshwane University of Technology and University of KwaZulu-Natal.

You cant do anything. Your face will be all over the internet and you will be called a racist for the rest of your life. The best thing is to just ignore them.

I don't think any of those brilliant minds outside with sticks were students.

There is going to be more and more EFF mobs on campus trying to get a reaction out of people to justify their mobs causing havoc.

While I agree it doesn't come without risk to your personal well being I disagree ignoring them is "best". UFS seems eerily calm (or at least without another massive protest) after trouble makers were met with force.

UCT is an example of what happens if you play nice, no doubt trouble will return there sooner than UFS. Sadly the "protesters" only seem to understand one language and it is not one of peace.

Stellies protesters clash with security during bid to disrupt classes

Johannesburg – A scuffle broke out between Stellenbosch University students and private security guards after students tried to disrupt classes on Wednesday morning, a SRC leader told News24.

"We took a decision that things can't run normally when students and workers are suffering. We wanted to disrupt classes," Lwazi Pakade told News24.

Pakade said a minor scuffle broke out between students and private security staff hired by the institution. He said students were joined by workers who were fighting against outsourcing.

Pictures sent to News24 by Pakade showed private security in full riot gear and armed with what looked like guns.

Protesters are fighting for the eradication of colonial statues. Last week, students aligned to the EFF slapped a poster onto a statue of Jan Marais. The statue had been erected after Marais donated £100 000 in 1918.

News24 previously released video clips posted on social media showing black and white students shouting at each other while police tried to keep them apart.

Stellenbosch University spokesperson Martin Viljoen said the institution would release a statement later on Wednesday.

If both UCT and UFS are calm how do you know the calmness at UFS is due to the protesters being attacked?

Because these "protesters" are cowards, making a noise because they fail at life.
 
Trouble expected at Tukkies tomorrow

I just got a Whatsapp warning about possible riots and unrest around Tuks tomorrow and the warning also suggests to stay away from Hatfield and surrounding areas.

This is not from my CPF but another closer to the area and its on a SAPS group.
