Group arrested for 'unlawful activities' at Wits released without bail

JOHANNESBURG – Twenty people have been released from the Hillbrow Police Station after contravening a court order at Wits University.

Yesterday the group, including 14 students, was arrested in connection with unlawful activity on campus.

University management has linked them to the illegal occupation of an admin building, vandalism of the institutions property and the alleged torching of a bus this week.

The arrested people are believed to be linked to the ‘Fees Must Fall’ movement.

Protesters disrupted the Varsity Cup game in Bloem this evening (Shimlas vs Madidaz): https://twitter.com/morganpiek

There's going to be a massive fallout after this.

Much as I really don't condone this crap, and all those caught (from both sides) in this need to be disciplined, the response doesn't actually surprise me. Varisty Cup has many long term implications for guys playing and its a passion for many of the others. Emotions will be high at games and protesters going in to disrupt this type of event are looking for trouble. I can actually only assume that they went in knowing full well that they would get into a physical fight.

What was this protest about though? Is it related to #Feesmustfall or UP or something else?

I think this is related to FeesMustFall, but actually the protest is ultimately irrelevant. This type of reaction is what I would expect if you went and interrupted a large(ish) rugby game.

Yup, they've been pushing for blood since RMF this time last year... They won't stop until they get it.

That is what worries me, since I tend to think these RMF (and others) don't actually know what is going to come there way if it does get really really ugly...

Bound to come to it... 'whiteness' is tired of taking the blame and keeping quiet while the race card is played constantly.

I am personally not 100% sure that the majority of the issues will arise from black on white or white on black violence. I think the factionism will get out of hand and the movements themselves may devolve and start fighting violently with each other along tribal lines.

The protest in started a few days ago, it involved mainly service workers protesting against outsourcing (peacefully - there was no trouble). For some reason the SRC decided to involve the students and things took a turn for the worse. I would prefer it if they dissolved the UFS SRC, they're always looking for trouble.

See Twitter for the latest updates. There is currently an altercation between protestors and students of a particular residence:

Does look decidely like something started to happen towards the one side of the field, and the protesters started concentrating there and then all hell broke loose... as to who started it, well that seems almost impossible to tell.

The people who interrupted the rugby with their protest started it.

I wonder if they feel that they achieved their goal..? The protestors sure ran like their lives depended on it

Sure they achieved their goal. Selfies for social media of their 'wounds' to show how they are victims and racist white people are oppressing them.
