UFS to investigate disrupted Varsity Cup match

Bloemfontein – The University of the Free State (UFS) has condemned the violence against protesters that disrupted the Varsity Cup Match between Shimlas and NMMU on Monday and has launched an investigation into the incident.

“The senior leadership of the UFS condemns in the strongest terms possible the violence against the protesters. Nobody has the right to take the law into their own hands,” the university said in a statement.

According to Lacea Loader, director of communication and brand management at UFS, the rugby players of both teams, as well as the match officials, immediately cleared the field as the protesters moved across the field towards the halfway line.

“Members of the UFS Protection Services gathered around the protesters but were outnumbered. After a few minutes, spectators ran onto the field. The protesters were chased off the field and beaten by the spectators.”

People who were injured during the incident were treated on the scene by medical personnel.

Loader said both the protesters and spectators included people that are not enrolled at the university.

The university has launched an urgent investigation into the matter using footage from the event to identify people that acted violently.

Protesters disrupt Varsity Cup clash

Cape Town - The Varsity Cup match between UFS Shimlas and the Madibaz was disrupted on Monday night due to protest action.

Play had to be stopped 17 minutes into the first half, with the Shimlas leading 12-7.

“We have contingency plans in place for dealing with match interruptions,” said Duitser Bosman, Varsity Sports CEO.

“The possible disruption of matches due to pitch invasion by individuals and groups with other agendas on our campuses, was discussed at length at previous Varsity Cup board meetings. A decision was made to respect the challenges universities face. No special rules were put in place to deal with disruptions, as our current competition rules are sufficient,” added Bosman.

The match resumed approximately an hour after the police and university security settled the situation and both teams agreed to continue with the match.

Shimlas ran out 46-19 winners.

They beat us up because we disturbed their rugby game

On Monday afternoon a group of protesters allegedly interrupted a rugby game at the University of Free State in a bid to draw attention to the plight of outsourced cleaners at the university. Rugby players and supporters went on to assault the protesters, resulting in clashes that later spread to the hostels and lasted all evening. According to witnesses, black students were specifically targeted under the watchful gaze of security and later the police. ANGELICO VANTO, a second year student in Corporate Marketing at UFS, spoke to The Daily Vox.

I was in my residence when the trouble started. I wasn’t at the rugby match. I have seen the video, but I can’t tell you details of what happened there. All I know is that it started at the rugby, and then moved to the SRC buildings. The police were at the building and people heard gun shots and windows breaking. Then the commotion reached the hostels area and that’s when I went down.

They [the police and the white students] were specifically targeting black students. The students threw stones at the protesters from their windows and when the black students retaliated, the police shot rubber bullets.

One of my friends was shot in the face with a rubber bullet. I was shocked at what I saw. I saw a police officer throw a girl to the floor. I saw three guys beat up a friend of mine in front of me – kicking him on the floor.

Now I don't know what happened there, but did it escalate over to the SRC buildings and hostels as told by the second year student?

Reading the media, it can be concluded that the onus must be put on those which assaulted the protesters where in my opinion both parties involved are liable. But yah, interrupting the rugby game was sending a message on which they received their desired answer...

Kudos to those which did their part in helping those which got hurt at the event.

If I am in a class and you come in to disrupt it, please don't cry afterwards.
If I play rugby and you com with your shyte to proof a point, don't cry afterwards.

You have your rights. Don't use it to limit my rights.

The boytjies invaded the pitch and the Boertjies bliksemed them.

What is it with these students and outsourcing? And why interrupt a rugby match because of it? Rather burn down the local ANC offices. The ANC makes this country's laws not the rugby players.
