Ministerial Statement on Resurgence of University Unrest

The Department acknowledges that university students, staff and workers, like all members of our society, have the right to protest and voice their opinions and grievances. However, in doing so they have a duty to do so peacefully and in a manner that respects both the rights and property of others. This right to protest is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and upheld by the Department of Higher Education and Training at all times.

The disruptions at the University of the Free State and University of Pretoria, as well as the violence at the University of Cape Town last week, clearly show that there are fringe elements seeking to destabilise our institutions as part of a perverse political agenda and attempting to dislodge legitimately elected student, worker and staff structures through illegal activity, violence and destruction of property. These fringe elements seem hell bent to exploit every problem as part of seeking to hijack legitimate student concerns for their narrow ends.

The Department urges university management to engage with legitimately and democratically elected structures, and address the concerns and grievances raised by these legitimate structures and not be held to ransom by elements who have no legitimate mandate.

The Department urges students and workers to adhere to the University rules, regulations and applicable protocols in dealing with grievances and matters of concern. All our public higher education institutions have structures through which these matters can be resolved, such as the Council, Institutional Forums, Student Representative Council, trade unions and Executive Management.

The Department calls upon the management of universities to take decisive action against those elements that are bent on using any excuse to turn our institutions into sites of violence and vandalism. The Department cannot and will not tolerate the destruction of property and threat to lives and requests the South African Police Services to assist with the safeguarding of students, staff, workers and university property. We also call upon all progressive forces on our campuses to condemn and distance themselves from these acts of intimidation, violence and vandalism. The primary objective of our universities is teaching, learning and research, and these activities should remain sacrosanct.

We need to intensify the struggle against racism, but at the same time condemn the short-sighted anti-white chauvinism rearing its ugly head on some campuses, as ours is a struggle to build transformed and non-racial universities and South African society. The Minister urges the institutional governance and management bodies to deal with issues of racism and discrimination firmly and with the respect, seriousness and urgency it demands. Racism and discrimination have no place in our democracy and these acts go against the spirit and letter of the Constitution of our country.

The Department will in due course be announcing and engaging stakeholders on processes to take forward the many progressive resolutions from the Higher Education Summit in order to accelerate the much-needed transformation in our higher education system. The Department recognises the urgency of addressing the big and enduring questions of transformation raised at this summit and the importance of new and different ways of engaging on university campuses so that transformation debates are characterised by dignity and a recognition of diverse perspectives.

The Department urges all stakeholders in the university sector to work towards building on the progress and gains made in the university sector in preparation for this academic year. We must protect that progress and allow order to be restored and preserved at all our universities.

oh man i wish i was a student.I would rather up a whole lot fellow students and go beat the **** out of these things.sometimes a good beating is the only way especially when ones culture is at risk of being trampled on
 
Will be interesting to see what transpires at the FNB Ikeys vs FNB Tuks at UCT Rugby Fields, Cape Town on 29/02/2016.
And any subsequent Varsity Cups matches for that matter...

Well not that this has stopped them in the past, but RMF are currently under very close watch since the conditions of the interdict are at least until the 15th of March - perhaps permanently. Also 16 students are suspended from UCT.

I've seen how women instigate like that at a protest more so when they feel safe with a mob behind them. Some poor dude got KTFO and this girl was probably not even pimp slapped.

And you legitimise them by reacting to them. These thugs are looking to provoke, by reacting to them you legitimise them. All you really need to say to one of these thugs is " So?"
 
Instead of violence they should have a sing off. Boere musiek vs Xhosa music.

Those idiots at the Kovsies match really stuffed it up for whites. Now the left have a lovely excuse to bleat on and on and on about how whites only care about rugby and will beat up anyone who prevents it from happening.

It also means more "protests" at rugby games with the main aim being violence.

Play had to be stopped 17 minutes into the first half, with the Shimlas leading 12-7.

“The possible disruption of matches due to pitch invasion by individuals and groups with other agendas on our campuses, was discussed at length at previous Varsity Cup board meetings. A decision was made to respect the challenges universities face. No special rules were put in place to deal with disruptions, as our current competition rules are sufficient,” added Bosman.

The match resumed approximately an hour after the police and university security settled the situation and both teams agreed to continue with the match.

Shimlas ran out 46-19 winners.

So the whole thing was about the Madibaz being sore losers?
 
What where they doing at the rugby game if the protest is about Afrikaans/fees/outsourcing must fall something?
So these people left you to protest and went on with their days, you then disrupt them and cry when they retaliate?

How far do you think you will push a bunch of kids who's cerebral cortex hasn't completely develop and are running on testosterone?

Not saying it is right just asking when you are constantly under threat of being attacked or even just inside a mob of people that are not friendly how long before you also get aggressive?

You can't start a fight and then cry when your opponent fights back.
 
Attack at UFS rugby match 'trampled' rights of protesters - Jansen

Bloemfontein – University of Free State Vice Chancellor Jonathan Jansen said on Tuesday that the brawl between protesters and spectators at the Shimla Park rugby stadium had opened up old wounds.

"Monday night's event was a setback for transformation, we had made so much progress. The acts of the spectators trampled literally and figuratively the rights of the protesters and opened old wounds," Jansen told reporters in Bloemfontein.

On Monday, a Varsity Cup match between the UFS and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was disrupted when protesters and students swarmed the field and took each other on in a massive brawl.

Jansen said the game started at 18:30 and that 17 minutes into the game, a group of protesters decided to disrupt proceedings.

"We condemn this strongly. Nobody had the right to take the law into their own hands. While the protests were illegal and disruptive, it did no harm to the physical well-being of the spectators," Jansen said.

He said his team has been working around the clock to meet the demands of contract workers demanding to be in-sourced, and was hoping to have reached an agreement by now.

Last year, following the #FeesMustFall protests, the university raised the minimum wages of workers from R2 500 to R5 000.

As expect it only the fault of those who chased them off the field,not the protesters, security, not the police for not bringing the situation at all universities under control,not the university management nor is it the political leaders who have been inciting it also Jansen should share with the rest of the country how to the university made "progress" while the rest of the country has not for years and is it really progress if one incident unravels it all.

I reckon a lot of people are just gatvol of these idiots taking the piss. Yes, they have the right to protest, but not on a ****ing rugby field. Their only intention was to upset the supporters and to hopefully get a reaction. They got what they wanted. And I'm glad they got moered.
 
UFS students vow to take revenge for rugby fracas

Bloemfontein – Tensions ran high at the University of Free State in Bloemfontein on Tuesday when a group of protesters attacked a student on campus.

News24 reporter Jeanette Chabalala said she arrived on the scene shortly after the male student, who had parked his Toyota Yaris outside a residence, was chased into a block of residences by the protesting students.

"The students were all just shouting for him to come out of the residence," said Chabalala.

Members of the Student Representative Council tried to calm the protesters.

"The group then flattened all four of the white student's tyres," Chabalala said.

Armed police officers also tried to intervene.

The protesters booed and threw stones at police, claiming they failed to protect them yesterday," said Chabalala.

On Monday, spectators at a rugby match assaulted black protesters who had interrupted the match, demanding to be heard. The protesting group was calling for an end to outsourcing.

"The black students told the police that they wanted to do to white students what other white people had done to them yesterday," said Chabalala.

One of the students shouted: “Yesterday we were beaten but you did not do anything, today when we want to avenge ourselves you attack us – you are protecting the whites". The group of students beside him shouted in agreement.

"The students said they would beat any sign of a white student they would see on campus today [Tuesday]," Chabalala added.

The university had suspended all academic activities following Monday's brawl.
