University Protests 2016

Too bad they aren't protesting at government buildings like last year, I fully enjoy their protest action when it gives the anc headaches and frustration.

The thing is that they are directing their protests at the wrong people. They should be taking their protests to government or the gates of Nkandla.

Left over food from all dining halls should be given to poor students.

The food at dining halls belong to the catering company, it's not for the university to decide what the caterers to with their goods.
How do you decide which students are poor enough to receive the leftover food from the dining halls. Seeing as they don't want to prove that they are financially needy enough to forgo having to pay the full registration fee I don't see how they will want to prove that they are poor enough to receive free food. It will become a free for all and the catering companies will end up working at a loss because every Tom Dick and Sipho will say that they are too poor to pay for food.
 
Wits University management has until noon on Tuesday to meet the demands of its SRC, following the suspension of student registration because of protests.

The university said on Monday that "face-to-face" registration would continue on Wednesday. It said most students would still be able to register online.

Wits student representative council (SRC) president Nompendulo Mkatshwa spearheaded student protests at the university's Hall 29 on Monday, where on-site registration was meant to take place.

She told parents and students at the time that the SRC would not permit any students to register until their demands were met by management.

The SRC is demanding free registration on the implementation of a first payment plan for all academically qualified students. They are also demanding a road map from both government and the university for a realisation of free education.

“We will be handing over our memorandum of demands to the university management and we will give the university 24 hours to respond,” she said on Monday.

"Our intent is not to render theses institutions ungovernable... our intent are (sic) to ensure that every academically qualified student registers in the year 2016. An injury to one is an injury to all."

New 2016 protests

Several university students took part in the protest in Gauteng on Monday including those from the University of Johannesburg, the University of SA (Unisa) and the University of Pretoria.

The protest follows last year's countrywide student demonstrations against fee increases for 2016.

Following the protests President Jacob Zuma announced that there would be no increase in fees for the year.

Wits University said in a statement that the historical debt of all students who were on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in 2015 would be settled by the state.

“Students who were not on NSFAS in 2015 will unfortunately be obliged to clear their debt before they will be allowed to register,” the university said.

Protest action in several universities in the province is expected to continue on Tuesday.

Violence breaks out between UP students and cops

JOHANNESBURG – Violence has broken out between police officers and protesting students and workers at the University of Pretoria (UP).

Students claim their grievances from last year's #FeesMustFall protests have not been fully met by university management. Students from both UP and Unisa joined on campus square where they have been protesting over outsourcing by the university.

‘Wits students assaulted’

This after students had gathered in Solomon House, a central Wits student meeting point, to call for free education for all.

Tweets state that students were allegedly given no eviction notice to leave Solomon House when they were forcibly removed.

Tensions remain high as students said they will not back down until their demands have been met.
