UP closes campus after student clashes

True colours are starting to show, aren't they. Who is the racist now? Who is the thug now?

Except that didnt happen, that is the head of security at Tuks, he is not that stupid; the EFF has been making up lies for their cause as well. Hitting someone behind the head is attempted murder the kid is a thug and should be prosecuted.

We ask for equality and we are called names instead.

lol...

Ofc they are just having a relaxing sit down asking to be treated equally, instead of assaulting people, breaking private property, disrupting classes and asking for the removal of another language. (Not to be treated equally ;))

/naïve

You also need to check the size of some of the Tuks students, the EFFs are a bunch of maer lighties. I dont think they have been in a fight yet. I am really impressed with the security at tuks and the remarkable restrain that the Afrikaans students showed.

Curious as to what forms that opinion?

Is it because the white kids at UCT are english and there is a perception that they are weaker than afrikaans students?

I think in general white english speaking South Africans are less homogenous and more individualistic than their Afrikaner counterparts which is why you are seeing such a backlash at Tuks rather than at UCT.

I mean heck UCT is so bad at supporting itself we get outnumbered by Stellies supporters when we play rugby at home.

Do you even stay in Pretoria?

I don't think so. Living in Pretoria you will know what kind of people hang out here...

My wife is from TUKS. i stayed in Pretoria from 2005 until 2015 ...

I studied at UCT.

Your opinion pretty much echoes typical BS opinions that people from Cape Town are all weak minded, soft individuals.

And the responses pretty much confirmed the mindset. Thanks for proving my point and exposing your bias and cognitive dissonance in the matter.

I never said anything about Cape Town...

If you stayed in Pretoria you would know these people here are like American Hillbillies. Like there is some hormone in the water or something. Sorry but I don't believe that you stayed in Pretoria. That is just my opinion and changes nothing of what you said in any way shape or form.

I don't buy that sorry, gotta call BS on that... that white dude was surrounded by black guys, he would never have said it, and that little **** came running from way off and smacked him from behind, no way is his hearing that good. i.e. the first people to **** him up would have been security, followed by the mob. That little **** would never have gotten close

There are people like that in Cape Town as well.

Biggest difference, I see is the UCT students just want to study. The protests at UCT have nothing to do with a fundamental concept that affects their studies, that is changing the language of instruction.

At TUKs the protests affect that fundamental belief and as such afffect the students on a more personal level. Which I Believe drives the protest and response more so.

It has nothing to do with TUKS students being more macho or UCT students being "wussies", but a perceived attack on ones culture and identity.

Hence, why I wanted to identify how typical bias can really skew such arguments.

How else do you explain the absolute zero resistance from UCT students when barbaric beings destroy and burn the property of their university.....? and there is probably a valid explanation (as you mentioned above), but the perception and first thing that come to mind are that they are just a bunch of pansies. :D

Haha.

The middle guy is black so how's he a Boertjie?

The majority of the tuks students do not give a dam about politics (or any university in SA). The EFF and SASCO have always tried to disrupt proceedings on campus and never had student support. The thing is though when they bring the barbarism that we saw at UCT to Tuks then you will find that the tuks students are more likely to stand up for their institution, that is already happening.

This is the current standoff https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...t=a.10150973900888776.550458.837953775&type=3 The violence is however disproportionate and 99% started by the EFF cowards.

^this.

The problem actually lies with the whole university politics scene. SRCs are essentially university offices for political parties elected by a minority of the electorate (because the majority are actually more concerned about their assignments than the mission statement of a candidate).

I would keep student councils to a faculty level only.

Would be interesting to know how many of those white students who claim to be 'protecting Afrikaans' actually do their studies in English. :p

My guess would be probably around 80%

I do think however the problem is not so much about the language of tuition, it's about the removal of a language that's the issue. There is really no need to remove any language. Add more if you want, no need to remove any existing languages.

Tuks has always had a duel system, my grandfather was there in the 1940s, my dad in the 1970s and my not to long ago. some lecturers are in English and so are some documentation. As I mentioned earlier, no one is arguing for a 100% Afrikaans University, that has never existed. I liked Tuks's duel system where you learned in two languages (if you were Afrikaans). I benefited enormously from it. Nothing is stopping the EFF kids from having English classes; in fact Afrikaans classes are the minority at Tuks. These guys are just thugs, their attack is more symbolic rubbish than anything.
