UP closes campus after student clashes

Fsck that. When we whites emulate blackness in any way, shape, or form, whether intentional or otherwise, we're called racists. They can sod off.

No, its not racist... its cultural appropriation...

You really need to get down with the SJW lingo my friend...

Why don't the protesters just do that?? :| You've just solved the problem.

Because teaching in two parallel languages when one can do is an obscene waste of our taxes. We cannot bend to the wishes of a few in order to accommodated their cultural sensitivities.

BWAAHAHA. Oh wow. Now we're concerned about taxes. For the past 22 years the concept of taxes has flown clean above the heads of voters who vote strictly along lines of race and loyalty. But now...think of the taxes!

Sorry what?

You mean like the black students are doing now? Or Afrikaans students sitting in on your class as they missed Afrikaans and then take the lecture in English instead?

I mean exactly what I said. I mean if you are going to attend an English class at least have the decency to communicate with the lecturer in English. No, those idiots want to roughshod everyone using language as a tool.

Is this what has happened at UP now?

Or maybe these students have the same lecturer for the Afrikaans and don't even think about what they're doing and if you asked nicely for them to please use English when in this class, or to ask the lecturer to repeat the question in English, that you may be surprised by the way people respond. Did that ever occur to you or are you 100% sure that they were doing it specifically to spite you?

We never had that issue. The lecturer told them to shut up or go back to their own class.

Not that we didn't complain mind you. We did but it was not considered to be an issue. Can you blame our anger?

Exactly. And the few classes that I can recall where someone asked a question in another language than English the lecturer always repeated the question in English and then answered it.

Did you ask the lecturer to repeat the afrikaans question + answer in English? Thats what our lecturers did when Afrikaans people asked questions in English classes.

We did. Only for it to happen again. It was a futile exercise.

Forced to learn Zulu, not forced to learn Afrikaans. Maybe universities should force students to pay even higher fees, since you like forcing so much....

In my degree, I'm forced to learn subjects I see absolutely no point in. Should I cry foul? Who am I forcing anything onto?

Nobody forced you to do the subjects, you chose the degree with its prescribed list of courses that count towards the point score required for the degree.

You enrolled for that course though.. Knowing very well what subjects you will have to do.

Settle down. Is it ok to have an Afrikaans course. Make it mandatory if you wish, but do not create a parallel system to accommodate tutoring in Afrikaans.

So in other words you cannot counter my point?

Think it happens everywhere....

If they disrupted the lectures in any way the lecturer told them to sod off....

I like UP's new approach, English lectures and tutorials in Afrikaans and Pedi, that seems like the best set up to me.

Sadly at all English NMMU I had 1 or 2 lecturers who didn't follow policy and would let the class be hijacked by people asking questions in Afrikaans, and worse still, responding in Afrikaans. I complained, but the problem popped up all year.
