Elevation, no. What about just maintaining status quo?

Nah, just throwing out the idea, the other language speakers won't pay for their languages to be improved in academic status.

Afrikaans has done a fair job in creating new terminology, for example:

  • English: computer; Dutch: computer; Afrikaans: rekenaar
  • English: laptop; Dutch: laptop; Afrikaans: skootrekenaar
  • English: software; Dutch: software; Afrikaans: sagteware
  • English: website; Dutch: website; Afrikaans: webwerf

Many words have their roots in Latin, for example, the English word "electricity", the Afrikaans word "elektrisiteit", the Dutch word "elektriciteit", the German word "Elektrizität", the French word "électricité", all have their origin in the Latin word "electricus" (resembling amber).

Here's a famous example of a sentence that is written the same, and has the same meaning, in both Afrikaans and English: "My pen is in my hand."

I know Solidarity has tried it, but in private universities will most likely not be research based Unies like Tuks or Stellenbosch, because it is difficult for private companies to fund basic research.

I've made reference to "The Purge" twice before recently, yes I think it is possible for this thing to go much broader.

ffs I spent a fair amount of time looking for a decent gig which I'm only settling into for 4 months now, really not in the mood to fire up the hunt again to escape the country ... :mad:

Yep, have researched a lot lately, many opportunities off these shores, but I love this city and this country, including most of the people. But this kark is scaring me quite a lot. Panama FTWF, they don't ban staffies.

If you were capable of introspection you would come to the same conclusion. Stop blaming others and take some personal responsibility.

You will always be an inferior human being unless you expend some effort at self improvement instead of focussing on destroying external things. And before the whining starts this has nothing to do with race.

The new Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation at UCT, Prof. Mamogkethi Phakeng, said in an interview on 702 earlier in the year that she thought private universities were going to take off over the next few years in response to the growing problems at our state universities, much as private/independent schools have done in response to public dissatisfaction with state schools.

As things are going, our universities may end up as undergraduate training colleges anyway. Research budgets are a soft target when students are threatening violence over fees and the current campus violence is certainly not helping to attract foreign researchers to South Africa. One of the tweets that circulated during the Wits protests last year went something like "they can spend money researching homo naledi but they don't have money to help students".

SAs research decline already started in 95 when the CSIR stopped focusing on basic research. Our Unis have some capacity, but I you are quite right, it is already in decline.
 
In '94 after the ANC won the election, a lot of people were worried about the future, and an old guy told us that you only have 2 options: stay here and fight and be unhappy, or leave. But he said there are 2 options when you decide to leave: you leave South Africa and find another country and always miss your country, or you emigrate to a country where they have a black government, a different flag etc. but most of the stuff around you looks a lot like South Africa. In other words make a mental emigration.
A lot of us made that emigration and have been quite happy in the "new" country. I had to make a lot of adjustments, and some things became better for all of us living here, but unfortunately a lot things did not improve or have deteriorated, but I have always tried my best to help the sun shine on all around me.
But now that the ANC is feeling the result of all their failures, and they are starting to panic about the coming election, they are starting to lash out at what they perceive to be a soft target. When all else fails, blame it on Apartheid and the big bad white racists.
I am getting tired of being made to feel I don't belong here, I have as much right to be here than anybody else - I have never victimized anybody to get what I have. I started working as an apprentice earning peanuts and worked by butt off to get ahead - I studied part time, first evening classes at Technikon and later correspondence through Unisa. I will not apologize for what I achieved, because I sweated blood and tears to get it.
These students that want everything for free must realize that something is only worth as much as what you paid for it.
 
Ngwe23 do you realize that this university (UP) was founded as an Afrikaans university, the reason that institution stands is because of Afrikaans people. So what right do you and the other #AfrikaansMustFall protesters have to take the language away? It's been said so many times here but I'll say it again, no one is forcing anyone to attend an afrikaans lecture. So how is it oppressing you? It is extremely difficult to find a Xhosa or Zulu lecturer with the credentials and experience to lecture courses such as engineering. Let's be real,EFF is not protesting for "equality in language policy" don't be ignorant, they are a party based purely on hatred and lack of education. We are one of a very small amount of countries in the world where there is affirmative action in place for the majority who are also in complete political control, you would think after 20+ years of unfulfilled promises the voting majority would have thought it might be time to try something new? I suppose they did when the EFF came along but that's also just a bunch of promises from a man who will never deliver anything and a spew of uneducated followers who somehow believe him. Stop crying "woe is me" get out and make your own life better.
 
Roelie, I loved South Africa enough to stay long after my brain and guts told me it was time to leave. We left in January.

What I am learning is that other countries are also beautiful and that seeing a future for your kids and their kids is a huge reward.

Sadly I have family trapped in South Africa so I keep an eye on events still.

My advice to everyone of all races who really do want to develop themselves and their families and their communities to make the move.
 
Looks like the protests in Pretoria has died down since the clashes yesterday?

Maybe it's not easy being the recipient of the violence instead of dishing it out?
 
Can someone please explain to me why Afrikaans needs to be removed? If you don't like the Afrikaans one, go to the English one???
