Let's be clear though, the character's look is a deliberate choice, now did they have to make it deliberately unattractive? No.
So why did they choose to do that....well the only explanation is to appease a certain demographic that has an agenda. An agenda that doesn't belong in gaming entertainment. Gaming is a leisure activity, it's sole purpose is to entertain. Part of that entertainment is suspension of belief and escape from reality. You can't do that successfully if you're constantly reminded of real world issues. It is also an aspirational activity, most people would like to play a character that they believe is the ideal version of themselves, it's fantasy fulfilment.
Unlike the movie industry, where the story is told to you as a passive viewer, gaming's draw is that You are the active character.
While I can somewhat see the need to change the way the world works, I cannot see gaming as the right vehicle to effectively do that.....this is a business, we aren't given games from free, it's a product and continuing to force social narratives into that product reduces its appeal to paying customers. The target audience matters more than a misguided moral crusade.
As for Naughty Dawg, they will either pivot or they will not meet their sales expectations.
