Update Xbox360 via flash?

A question Doobiwan or anyone else here.
I dial up through my mobile on my pc, will a normal network cable connecting the 360 to my pc work to update it?
From what I understand it should work, right?

For the hell of it i just tryed to do the update manually on an unupdated xbox & getting the same "unrecognised disc" errors with both a cd/rw + dvd/rw.
Burnt using windows + renamed the file to default.xex
as per instruction i only put the single file on the media.

Also tryed 1 x dvd/rw leaving the file as the original name - same result

I wonder if one must 1st have the November 07 update installed prior for this one to work.
Will give that a try to see if that cracks the problem.

The flashing option, the problems not the media.
The Nov07 backwards compatibility update works on the same cd/rw i tryed before, burnt using the same steps.
It does have a default.xex file inside of it tho.
dated 26/11/07
Updates the Dash to 2.0.6683.0
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm#disc

With that update installed i still get "unrecognized disc" trying to use that later $SystemUpdate file, following their instructions and renaming it default.xex.....maybe microsoft got the wrong file sitting there for download

Edit:
PLUS
I can't see there being much diff as one file is 26/11/07 and the later one that we can't seem to get working is 1/12/07
like i say brings the dash up to 2.0.6683.0

Same result as Kage re "mixed media content" showing in the dvd part of the dash is all.
The BackCompat update one works, can't say the same for the $SystemUpdate one

Anyone with a Live up to date box
whats your dash version?

I just organised with a pal that he bringing his laptop around tonight.
A question: Is a HDD required for the update? I've got one but he doesn't

Is there an update to the backwards compatibility solution? I tried what is currently on the xbox.com site. It's a default.xex and does run through the program. Only problem with me is, my 360 doesn't go through step 4...as in it doesn't allow the live update to allow my 360 to actually support originals. Even tried putting one in the drive after the disc said the update was complete, says "game could not start, please redownload the game" of some sorts and it's attempting to run the game off disc.

I contacted MS about this and it about drove them nuts...they can't figure out what's going on except that I possibly have a bad hdd. Hell I bought it pre-owned off Amazon.com and I successfully DL'd a Variety Map Pack for COD4 so the hdd stores information successfully. It also successfully stores updates and such on the hdd for all the other 360 games I have.

They're sending me a disc through the mail *they're paying for the postage stamp I guess...either that or I'll have to do the paying when it arrives...as they didn't ask me about any payment options and such*.

I forgot who it was that said that has some of the past updates and said they'd be willing to send them, could you send them my way? I'm not giving up on this problem, not by a long shot.

BTW, when troubleshooting to solve the problem...you know how much it sucks to have to format your hdd with a 444MB file on there that takes 2 hours to DL? lol it sucks bad because you'd have to redownload it again...clearing the cache doesn't solve this problem...the problem exists with the program proceeding to step 4 *according to the xbox.com site* which is doing an OS update via online through Live.

It's like when it comes to original Xbox games, my 360 doesn't know the damn meaning of Xbox Live lol but when it comes to 360 games, hell it lives there lol.

Why dont you just update through live since you have a connection?
You downloaded the map pack for COD4 right...

Just check whether the game you want to play is backward compatible, not all xbox games is playable on the 360.
Check the 360 and ms official websites.

There's probably a reason for it Kage. In fact, there's is is only one reason to not connect a 360 to the net....

No my 360 is not modded. It was bought a few weeks ago and I'm NOT tearing down my 360 lol too damn expensive to take the risk.

I dunno what it is as I stated above. It does updates and all that for 360 games, but for anything else, unless I'm purchasing from marketplace, it will not do online updates. It's the reason why I'm going through all this trouble....look at the Xbox site for example...

There are 5 steps...the 5th step being put your original in and have fun...

My console *upon burning the disc* goes all the way through 1-3...but does NOT do step 4...which is the online OS update. And I am STILL looking for a way around that.

In short btw, my Xbox 360 is not modded so NO I'm NOT banned from Live...as a matter of fact, I've been playin the **** out of COD4 through Xbox Live lol. I'm just trying to get my 360 to play some original Xbox 1 games.

*edit* Assuming that was the "only reason" you was talking about...

hehehe...he is smart. ;)

eliminator, it is odd, as updates are automatically done when you log on.
Is this all xbox games or a specific game?

So far it's doing it with 5 Xbox originals that are on the compatibility list. These games are:

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2
Jade Empire
Project Gotham Racing 2
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

I'll insert the game in the 360 while being connected to live...even tried it with my gold account profile, as I use another one for offline games that has a silver membership, the screen will go blank for about 10 seconds or so and then it'll pop up in the right hand side of the screen saying:

"The game could not start. Please download the game again."
and I'm trying to run it off disc.

The update process will not start automatically and it will not start off a burnt cd using the default.xex file. I tried the $SystemUpdate file from microsoft.com containing the file without the extention, but my 360 sees it as a mixed data disc. I also can't get the 360 to read the file from USB...as I dunno how to do that...I only know how to make it read music off USB.

As stated, MS has sent me that disc through the mail containing the updates *free of charge believe it or not*. They stated that they sent it to me to see if it was because their file is corrupted or if I made the file corrupt during DL, or if I have a defective console or hdd. Everytime I try to add the update, I always format the hdd and clear it's cache. It never works...just does the update and doesn't proceed to do the OS online update.

If I could figure out how to get the console to use the su20076000_00000000 file, I could try that.

And yes I did burn the file in this order:
$SystemUpdate_12-2007\$SystemUpdate\su20076000_00000000
