Updating to WP8.1

Ivanr, not sure why you can't read your own links, but let me quote for you:

As is plain to see, they are not "one and the same." WP8.1 is OS, Lumia Cyan is firmware for Lumia phones. Obviously, other makes of WP8 phones will get 8.1, but not Cyan. Those manufacturers will put out their own firmware updates.

Guys, when are we expecting WP8.1 to hit our networks.

I'm sh*t scared of losing my warranty.

Just had my phone frozen by some customer service consultant at a retailer's service center who didn't know what he/she was doing. My phone wasn't making calls and it was saying "call dropped" everytime.

Got the lightning bolt + settings icon after numerous buttons were pressed at the same time as the phone was being attempted to have its screen lit up by the consultant.

The consultant still maintains that he/she knew what they were doing and that I should have taken my phone in for a software update. It has been running Black since early last month.

2-3 months at the earliest.

Just upgrade to the dev preview, if your phone is so *****ed that it needs to go in for a warranty claim they probably won't be able to tell you upgraded to 8.1 dev preview and I doubt they will void your warranty anyway.

If it's a Nokia phone I'd argue that its warranty holds even with the dev preview. It's all MSFT now in any case. And if the local okes argued, I'd take it straight to satya nadella, cc-Ing the local bods.

You're a registered developer, after all.
 
Grim and Arthur please note that the final Cyan(WP8.1) Update will only roll out after the launch of the Lumia 930 which will have Cyan pre-installed as rumored at the end of June 2014, then only we would see the official roll out of Cyan updates for all other models. We do not have wait to long looking at the current date.

The 630/635 is already available internationally with Cyan installed

Just because one model has Cyan installed doesn't mean that it's ready for all devices.

The earliest that WP8.1/Cyan will be pushed OTA will be late July/early August

Our local carriers also also quite slow to approve updates so add another couple of weeks to a month to that.

Please believe in what you might see as the truth. My posting was based on a reasonably accurate source.
We can play "Ping Pong" table tennis with this forum and this topic, but we still have to wait for the official Nokia update.
My personal view is wait and see, simply that.

Windows Phone 8.1 coming to SA

Microsoft South Africa announced on Thursday, 26 June 2014, that Windows Phone 8 users will soon be able to upgrade to 8.1 in the “coming months”.

Holding their first devices event since their acquisition of Nokia, Microsoft SA gave a live demo of the 8.1 interface, which included a customisable, tile based home screen; universal applications which sync across Windows devices; improvements to One Drive cloud storage; the ability to save application to SD cards; and a software enabled power saving mode which can extend the battery life by up to 12 hours.

Windows Phone 8.1 was first announced at the 2014 Microsoft Build developer conference in April this year, where the new notification tray – known as the “Action Centre” – was punted.

Another feature Microsoft SA showed off was the “shape writing” system, a gesture input system for Windows Phones’ keyboards which works similarly to Swype or SwiftKey – which are already available on Android devices.

Notably absent from the demonstration was Cortana – Windows’ version of Siri which allows users to interact with their devices via voice commnand.

A Microsoft SA spokesman said Cortana was still in beta in the US, UK, and China, and no SA release date had been set as yet.

The update started rolling out yesterday.

The version number for the OS is 8.10.12397.895, the same as the last update to the dev preview program.

The availability of the update for all the models can be found here: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-africa/

Currently it is available for the 625 CV, 925 CV and 925 MTN phones.
 
DP just got updated to build 12400, newer than the build rolling out with Cyan. 21mb download
