Updating to WP8.1

The update bricked my phone  The phone was stuck on the spinning gears screen at 75% for about 10 hours. I had to restore using the Nokia Care Suite. All my pictures and music are gone

On the plus side though, at least there is a method to fix a bricked phone :D

Your backup was where?

Quick question... anybody with wp8.1 use absa.mobi and not able to get past the securePhrase screen?
Think it's about time they bring out that app already.

They are working on a fix, either use the desktop site or UC browser in the meantime

I really do not understand the rush to install this Preview 8.1 when the FULLY BUG FREE "CYAN" Update is due for roll out in June/July 2014. This Cyan update for Nokia will have all the Nokia extras without the bugs as widely debated on WPCentral forums PLUS it WILL NOT "Void" your warranty. :D

What 8.1 bugs? Only real issues I have is that WhatsApp sometimes doesn't open and I just have to reopen it, no biggie. The other is that the speech recognition feature (when you long press the search button) often opens when I put my phone down.

Besides, WP8.1 and Cyan are completely different updates. WP8.1 is the OS (from Microsoft), Cyan is firmware (from Nokia) which leverages off the OS.

I couldn't be bothered with Cortana, but all the other goodies that 8.1 brings far outway any other issues. :-)

I agree.
I have had zero issues after updating my 920 to 8.1.

The truth of the matter is that CYAN update includes Windows Phone 8.1 PLUS Nokia's extra refinements with new applications ALL without the known bugs WITHOUT voiding our warranties. These are the facts gentleman as obtained from Nokia Technical. The rollout window starts near the end of June/July. So geeks must not complain if they brick their phones just because they could not wait.

p51Mustang - Please do yourself a favour and go and lookup all about the CYAN Update on the Nokia servers overseas.

I recently bought a 920 to test out WP. Coming from 5 years of android wp8 was shocking. I regretted my decision immediately.

Bit of research and upgraded to 8.1 and I'm really happy. A proper functioning OS with proper capabilities. Pretty happy with my purchase now :D. I wont lie Cortana speech recognition is really really good even with our accents. Had no problems, not something I use everyday but MS did a really good job.

It is to remembered that this 8.1 upgrade is known as Developer Preview = exactly what the title states and thus NOT the OFFICIAL 8.1 Upgrade = Not perfect - still has some laboratory work to complete the product before official release. This is so often conveniently forgotten in all forum posts.

I never said it was the official update? I know it is developer preview, but that is not the point. The point is that WP8 is k@k and WP8.1 is a good OS.

Ivanr, not sure what you're on about, no-one said our 8.1 update was the final release and we did it fully knowing it is a developers release. Nor are we complaining.

WP8.1 is the OS (from Microsoft), Cyan is firmware (from Nokia) which leverages off the OS. Cyan will install as soon as it is available OTA here in SA. So will updates to the 8.1 Developers Preview.
