I'm so Goth, my wrists slit themselves
So I am looking to get an upgrade kit, (basically board, cpu and ram). Have about R7,500 doesn't leave much on the table but it is still decent to get some thing in the middle of the road.

Rarely game these days, so it really isn't a factor AMD vs intel , it is leaning more towards productivity I am an intel die hard

If I go the AM 4 road I can add a m.2 drive as the am4 bundle works out cheaper. Quite out of the upgrade loop. Would prefer intel over AMD, is it worth going with the 12gen i5 over the 14400, considering the issues with the 14th gen.

If I go with the 12400 or the 5600 setup I can get a 512gig m.2 drive. I do have a 256 SSD, so no biggie.

Options in full

Ryzen 5 5600 6-Core 3.5GHz
MSI A520M-A PRO AMD A520 Ryzen Socket AM4
G.Skill F4-3200C16S-16GVK Ripjaws V 16GB (2x16GB)

As usual no upgrade path on the below cpu-wise: (doubt you will buy i9 12th gen cpu''s :P)
am4 is a dead socket
lga1700 is a dead socket (12/13/14 gen)
the new intel 1851 socket is a dead socket (core ultra, expensive.. good for productivity though)

i5 14th gen units weren't affected with the "i burn myself out" issue.

Amd am5 has at least one more new cpu range coming before the am6 socket in 2028.

If you plan to upgrade cpu later on, go for the am5 as it will make your investment last longer..
If you need quicksync for productivity.. then the choice is obvious, stick to intel.

Just check which performs better for your productivity needs. (probably the intel at that pricepoint)

not likely to upgrade again for at least another 7-8 years, dead platform or not, doesn't bother me in the least...it is more of a performance\price point in other words is it worth throwing another 2k at the am5 system compared to the am4 system. I really don't care about "dead platforms".....

Besides the 8400 only slightly edges out the 5600, even thought it is DDR 4. It doesn't bother me, as much as paying 2k grand more for a 7% uplift for example. It is about best bang for buck and I don't see any reason why the 5600 shouldn't be a serious consideration.

So the obvious choices then is productivity intel 14400 wins hands down, price point the 5600 wins.

Well there ya go then, answered your own question :p

if the ddr4 thing isnt an issue, either go intel for quicksync or save a few bucks and go amd

Get a new Am4 B550 motherboard for 2k or even a bit less.
Then get a secondhand Ryzen 5700X for around R3k on Carbonite
You can also get Ram on Carb R1-1,5k for 32gb ddr4 3200/3600 depending if you want rgb or not.

Yeah I did check carb, a bit on the surface, prefer warranty, and lately the pricing on carbs a lot has taken the piss. Unless it is a really good deal(there are some), rather buy in on the platform cheap and buy a better cpu from carbs 1-2 years down the line and get a way better deal on a ryzen 7 or 9 down line.

Same applies to the intel, get the 14400 and wait a bit

But yes I did think about carb, just not in your way :)

I've always been partial to AMD due to it's long legs ito upgrades. I myself upgraded a while ago, not a gamer. It came down to the then 5500 vs a cheaper 4560G. Performance difference & power consumption vs CPU & GPU plus higher price made it a no brainer.

With the difference I added a NVME disk to replace the SSD and still saved. Never regretted it and my system works hard. I just need to add another 16GB soon.

I'm going to get a lot of hate ...

2x 16gig - thats why I showed it, It takes you to R6198.

/Edit: Tbh, I'd ask them how much it will be for the same with 1 x 32GB. Better for upgradability later.

Never run an AMD on 1 stick of RAM you'll lose almost 20% performance

I am not touching evetech...thanks, but no thanks. I am buying for warranty and that is the last thing I want to deal with, when it comes to evetech lol

Just buy whichever has the best warantee at the best price. They will all be decent with one having the edge in certain areas and the other in others. One thing AMD is better at is power consumption. My 14400 machine does chew quite a bit but its my home PC for entertainment so isn't on 24/7.

Still a toss up between the 5600 and 14400. I am leaning towards the 14400.

I'm very happy with mine. I mostly use it for home things like gaming, CAD browsing etc but I've done some work related things on there like coding/video encoding/transcoding etc and its been great.

I am shopping around a lot, lots of bookmarks and stuff to check, if I account for shipping some work out more than others. Wootware has the best deals so far, but not all selections I wanted.

It is a really pain actually....

But I think I have my heart set on the 14400 kit, I do a lot rendering and polygon heavy assets, most of it is hybrid GPU/CPU.....

But I will ask on carb and see what the dealers can offer me for an upgrade kit as a last effort, before pulling the trigger.

@Progenix Oj101

This guy might have something for u

I hear you on the AM4 and the no need for an upgrade path

Already checked him out he has some decent kits but none of them with 32gig ram, which is a must. Currently no intel kits either so not currently on my consideration list.

Sigh and things are only getting harder found a AMD Ryzen 7 8700F for 3.5k, will need to get board and ram else where, So FML...............
