Hey all,

It's that time of year when I get to upgrade again. Currently I have a GS4 i9500 (was a GS3 then I got mugged) on a Vodacom TopUp 315s with R315 airtime and 250MB data @ R499pm inc phone.

So I considered carrying on down the Samsung path but am becoming slightly disillusioned with their constant additions of useless features that one never uses and only make the phone look good on paper. So no S5 for me.

I've been eyeing the HTC One M8, the specs look pretty good but it doesn't seem to be available yet otherwise the Sony Xperia S2.

My other option is to get a tablet. I'm happy with my S4 and don't really feel the need for another phone yet (ask me again in 2 years lol).

I'm not really keen on an iPad, and seeing as I have just upgraded to Win 8 think a Microsoft based tablet may be the way to go, but Vodacom seems to only offer Android tablets (I have nothing against Android - I'm just thinking of better integration for work purposes etc.)

So with alll this in mind, should I wait a while for some better deals on phones or just go the tablet route (in which case what would you guys suggest?).

Also I see that the topup contract has fallen away? Or is it just hidden behind this new 'Smart' option? I waay prefer a topup deal as I only have a budget of R500pm from work.

Many Thanks in advance for your considerations.

I saw the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition on a R389 contract - 1GB data X 24.

Maybe get a 2GB contract, unless you're on wifi all the time and only need the 3G for when you're roaming.

This would be my personal choice, as I love the stylus functionality.

Oh, and you can make phone calls with it as well. :)

The topup contracts are still available but taking into.consideration the data add-on, it may make more sense to have a look at the new Smart contracts

Test signal thoroughly bet ie going this route. I don't get signal and I'm in the middle of an area within their coverage according to the online map

Here's an idea how about not upgrading? If you are happy with your phone why not let the contract run its course and switch to prepaid which seems to be cheaper then contracts these days. Remember it's not really an upgrade anymore as you are paying for the device and getting less talk time, data and those useless sms. I am considering cancelling my contract this year.

Thanks for the input guys. based on the above, I am looking at the Sony Experia Z2 and trimmind on Smart S for R469pm with 75 minutes 200smses and 200mb data. What I now need to figure out is how long those 75 minutes will last me. I don't really know how long I spend calling people. Data is my biggest consumption really. 200mb isnt much but I onyl get 250mb with my current contract anyway.

Don't mean to hijack - but also time for my upgrade... Only thing is - for Z2 or S5 on upgrade it is almost R800 a month on my current contract. If I chose another contract (for less per month) then I have to pay in something like R2000 for the device. I think that is absolute bullschit. Why penalise existing customers for an upgrade? If I cancel the contract and take out a new one I can get it for R450.

Which is exactly what I am going to do. Thank you MTN and goodbye.
