If you have a standered Wireless Router you could be missing alot!! You can get your standered Access Point to do so much more, like WDS, or different wireless modes such as AP-client, ap-bridge etc.

Here are some sites that offer free firmware:

www.dd-wrt.com
www.sputnik.com
www.sveasoft.com

I have 2 Linksys WRT54GL and loaded it with DD-WRT. Set up WDS and works beautifully!

DD-WRt

We also use DD-WRT extensively and have had very good results. Also allows you to boost the power of the transmitter up to 251mw if required (not legal though)

Hi John

how do you boost the transmitter??

Checkout the Wiki for DD-WRT

Software option to increase Tx power to 251mW see below option
** Transmit Power Adjustment (0-251mW, default is 28mW)
This firmware is just missing OLSR routing for Wireless Mesh networking.
