US army 'wants more immigrants'

The United States army is to accept immigrants with temporary US visas, for the first time since the Vietnam war, according to the New York Times.

Until now immigrants have had to have permanent residency - a "green card" - in order to qualify for the services.

But those with temporary visas will be offered accelerated citizenship if they enrol, the Times says.

The Pentagon hopes the scheme will cover shortages in areas like medical care and language interpretation.

Many temporary immigrants will have been granted visas on the basis of their education or skills, so the defence department expects the new recruits to be more qualified than applicants who are US citizens - and in particular to have languages useful in combat zones like Afghanistan and Iraq.

"The American army finds itself in a lot of different countries where cultural awareness is critical," said Lt-Gen Benjamin C Freakley, the top recruitment officer for the army.

"There will be some very talented folks in this group," he told the New York Times.

"The army will gain in its strength in human capital, and the immigrants will gain their citizenship and get on a ramp to the American dream."

Any breathing human being can get one of those. I think even getting a visitors permit and then koncking on the door of a recruitment office might just get you in. If they like you that is. Best would be to wait for it and then go speak to someone at the embassy

True to a degree.

Yes, it will be a massive adjustment. But if the kids are still small, they will hardly notice the dad not there for his basic training. From there on in appart from call up it's a normal working job.

But like any other job it has it's cons I'm sure.

I sent them a e-mail a few years ago asking about the famous 'green card' and it took the US army 3 weeks to reply - I had already forgotten about it.

I got the e-mails from my girlfriend who deals with the US Embassy regularly (trips for her boss etc)

I'm reminded of how my grandfathers used to complain about U.S soldiers in WW2. They said they were molly coddled andspoiled referring often to tonnes of ice cream shipped in for them. Just the other day on T.V I saw a Brit complaining about Americans getting ice cream and being spoiled in Afghanistan.

and believe me, when you have been living in your own filth for a few weeks out in the open treats like that are not insiginifcant, they are hugely uplifting to spirit and moral.
