Many of the progressives are angry with Biden. He is not supporting their issues or their candidates.

Ouch!

Trump will win this, easily.

I honestly believe that even the Democrats believe him to win. Why? Because Biden released an advert attacking Trump for being "too soft" on China - he is letting Trump dictate the context of the debate.

What's the plan if China develops the Covid-19 vaccine ?

Biden is polling lower than Hillary did during this time in the last election. The number of people that are "very enthusiastic" about him is at a historical low for Democrats (8 points lower than Hillary).

I wonder if he deleted some emails that the director of the FBI could talk about oh, say a week before folk actually go to the polls.

I also agree with Bernie. Exactly what Ive been saying

How do you think thats going to work out after Biden has spurned the platforms the progressives were on, and said that AOC is not the future of the party.

The Netherlands have locked down and explicitly stated yesterday, or the day before, that the economy is not as important as peoples lives.

Contrast that with Governors who think that people should be sacrificed for the economy.

Your binary thinking aside.

Can I ask you a question. Have you ever lived in poverty? Like unable to put food on the table?

Trump literally tells people that he is really rich but apparently Pelosi having too much Ice cream is why people aren't going to vote democrat
But Trump is the man of the people, good working class folk, hands as rough as sandpaper.

That explains his historic lows?

He's polling has him anywhere from +4 to +11 with an average of around +6. Hillary had an average 10 point lead.

Not sure that qualifies as historic lows.

Obama was +4 over Romney, he was +7 over McCain; Bush was +2 over Kerry and in 2000 he polled *lower* than Gore.

As a kid yes.

I also lived in a township as a young engineer for a year, as it was cheaper for my boss to "house" me on a vacant plot in the township. We were carrying out works on the old RDP type projects. It was in Cala in the Eastern Cape.

My experiences there shaped my views profoundly.

I have. Have you?

I have been working since I was 14. I had to buy myself and siblings our own clothing and school supplies. Worked two jobs to get out of debt from carrying my family. I have supported my family for two decades. I raised a younger family member from my early twenties. I have had plenty hardship. Now, things are pretty rosy. But, the only reason the financial burden has lessened if because dependents have died and I have through god knows what managed to claw above all of it.

Through all that hardship, I cannot imagine going without any income for weeks and weeks. It makes complete sense to force them into food queues and let them face landlords who are going to evict them when all this ends.

But YoU WaNT peopLE to DIE if YOU want to LIFt the LocKdoWN!@$$

Stellar critical thinking in this thread.

I get it. Pretty much similar way I grew up in a sense. I got lucky with a construction company and worked as a labourer and got my degree through them. But as a kid, yeah it was rough.

I was able to contrast my upbringing in poverty with my experiences of the poverty that ordinary black people grow up in everyday. As poor as we were, having to ration food at the end of the month, watching kids stand in queues to get water for their house at the end of each day, changed my views. *Trigger Warning* The reality of white privilege hit me square in my face.

Countries like the USA, who can drop a Billion dollars on a wasted military expenditure and not blink an eye, can come to the party here and provide the financial support to ensure people can get food etc.

But look at the protests? Are they about food? They are about haircuts, tattoos and so on.

What is your take on the Las Vegas mayor and Texas Governor who are willing to sacrificial the lives of their people? They literally say this.

Yes, there are people in the USA who are facing the real dilemma. But it begs the question, why was there little to no concern for their situations before the pandemic?

South Africa is a far more complex debate. I do not envy Cyril. The Faustain Bargain he has been faced with is an incredibly difficult decision. All I can say is thankfully it is him and not Zuma.

He has had to balance many factors. I think the prevalence of AIDS and TB left them with little choice but to opt for the full lockdown and in the meantime lobby the IMF for the loan. I only hope the loan is administered responsibly and the people who are hungry are helped. As I said the prevalence of AIDS and TB makes the alternative option of leaving the economy open, would be far dire. Overload of the limited resources at SA hospitals, leading to a cascading effect was judged to be far more serious than the financial impact.

As an aside - Quick snap from Google Maps of where I lived in the township in Cala (the red mark). I have very fond memories of waking up to the sounds of the pig from across the street being slaughtered for the feast for their daughters wedding. They had good Umqombothi though.
