US Election 2020

Given the exponential growth of the disease, University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers says it is cheaper to stop the spread today than it will be tomorrow. “The relevant choice is whether to take dramatic actions today when the number of cases is measured in the tens of thousands,” he says, “or whether to take even more dramatic actions in the future when the number of cases is measured in the hundreds of thousands, or in the millions.”

The number of confirmed US cases is rising by roughly 38 percent each day, on pace to reach into the hundreds of thousands by the end of the week, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. Deaths have been rising at a slower rate, around 23 percent per day, suggesting some of the rise in case count may be the result of accelerated testing. Still, any relaxation of social distancing would likely cause those numbers to spike, with devastating consequences for both public health and economic activity.

That's not a bad article even though its by a leftist. I wouldn't just quote that little but though. You need to read the whole thing. The second half is good.

Oh man, you sound like me 2+ weeks ago when I still wasn't taking this seriously  (I went to a music festival in San Diego and celebrated St Paddy's day at the bars the following weekend).

It took me a couple articles shared on social media and news sites to truly understand what flattening the curve meant - and why what I did was dangerous and why we need to do a shelter in for the entire country. Take a look at this link to understand why what you outlined won't work:

Read the article cerebres posted.

In cushy middle class countries, I think lock-downs will be pretty painless.
Here in South Africa, they are probably going to kill more people than the virus.

With luck, the infection models have been way off and far more people have actually been infected.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/oxford-study-coronavirus-may-have-infected-half-of-u-k.html

This would mean a few things if this is the case.
1) The mortality rate is far less than what is recorded (more like the flu).
2) Lockdowns will be pointless
3) All the resources going towards lockdowns can then be allocated towards patient care.

Here in the US, it's not painless. And it will be much worse economically for South Africa.

But, I just don't think you are getting it. I'm not advocating that a shelter in won't hurt the economy, it DEFINITELY will and some may very well die from it.

BUT, south Africa is very compromised because of AIDS. This is a fact: almost every country, be it the US, Iran, Italy, Germany etc. that reached 100 cases are at a point of no return - # of cases grow at 35% per day. South Africa is already following this trajectory. Simply put the number of infected will reach 5000 by the end of the month and 35 million by end of April. The death rate here won't be the worldwide average of 4.5% my man, it will be MUCH higher. And that's why Cyril did what he had to do.

You are advocating for millions of deaths by not wanting a lockdown.

Ah, ok.

Anyway maybe take this to the Kung flu section.

So awkward, I'm Asian - my Asian friends here have deep anxiety because of what the President has been saying and we've seen attacks all over the country rise as a result (I've only had Uber's cancel on me) but I'm glad you are on the side of thinking that it's funny?

I know you are Korean and, no if people are treating you crap because of your race then its not funny.
I also get my share of racist crap.

I'm sure you have found a great scapegoat in Trump, which explains your attitude.
Asians are not the only people who get to suffer from hate crimes.

Maybe talk to someone about your issues.

One person tests positive for COVID-19 after attending 'coronavirus party,' Beshear says
Kentucky's overall confirmed coronavirus cases jumped to 163 Tuesday with at least one case stemming from a "coronavirus party," Gov. Andy Beshear said, admonishing the practice and calling for an immediate end to such gatherings.

“This is the part where I, the person that tells everybody to be calm, have to remain calm myself," Beshear said. "Because anyone who goes to something like this may think that they are indestructible, but it’s someone else’s loved one that they are going to hurt.”

You're still making the same mistake. Why even bring up things that don't factor in or compare to each other? Brain surgery is extremely risky too, yeah so what? You brought up smoking (which kills you over decades vs 2-3 weeks like COVID-19) or driving.

Everything has a risk, me going out my door is risky, an AC unit might fall on me - but what's the point of bringing this up? We know this. It's to downplay the virus as an inherent risk we should all take for the sake of the economy, and that's just where we fundamentally, and respectfully disagree.
I have never stated that nothing should be done.
I have said that it should be balanced.

Why am I not remotely surprised it doesn't matter to you at all what individuals experiences are as a result of the President's words. You can't even accept responsibility for incorrectly reading an article.

It's not that underhanded :D I think I've never seen Trump more sarcastic

I think the way he does it makes it seem like hes calling him a rhino though, its only underhanded in that sense :p

The village idiot.

Has Donald Trump had enough of Anthony Fauci?

In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, Antony Fauci has rapidly become America's security blanket.
The head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Fauci's blunt, fact-based approach to the crisis -- as a member of President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force -- has been a refreshing alternative to the President's tendency to exaggerate and bluster in the now-daily press conferences on the virus and its spread.

But there are signs everywhere you look that Fauci's days as a high-profile member of the task force may well be numbered.

Let's start here. We know that Trump doesn't like any star to shine brighter than his. The more TV you do, the more the press writes positive things about you, the more Trump begins to turn on you.

Trust me, Trump is uniquely aware of Fauci's star status. Here's the President on March 17:
"The people behind me are total pros. All over the world, they're respected — Dr. Birx; Anthony, who has become a — where is Anthony? — become a major television star for — for all the right reasons. No, he's just so professional. So good."
Okay so this publication believes this guys is the safety net keeping it all together.
They believe that the more positive press he gets might cause Trump to fire him, which would be bad.

So what's the logical thing to do?
Create a conspiracy theory and make it worse.
Share it all over.

Its Tyson.
He's posted that crap 20 times the last week and will post it another 20 times in the next week.

He won't post this though.

Fauci is a trained doctor who understands how to "manage" a person who has narcissistic personality disorder. Being around Trump must be like walking on eggshells, but he needs to play that game for the greater good of society. He needs to constantly validate Trump and stroke his ego while saying what needs to be said.

It is called the Chinese virus because it originated in China.

Stupid people have always and will always be tribalist(racist) especially during difficult times when they feel threatened.

Changing the name doesn't make it less so.

Kung flu is funny. It actually makes lite of the virus. When you can't laugh anymore and get too serious is when the real trouble will start.

Trump calls it the Chinese virus
  1. to deflect from his mishandling of the matter; he'd rather have people express outrage over this phrase, than talk about how he dismissed the coronavirus issue just weeks ago; plus his base get a kick out of it, and
  2. narcissists take credit for accomplishments not theirs, while blaming their failures on others; Trump needs someone or something to blame; who better to blame than his traditional arch enemy China; now he can also boast: "see, I told you that China is a problem".
On the bright side for Trump, trade disruptions due to coronavirus, will hide what a monumental failure his trade war with China has been.
