They're in service of a man who spat on the 1st amendment for a photo.

They're there to check folk who are expressing their 1A rights.

Those folks have a message of black lives matter.

"I was just following orders" doesn't cut it.

Wow this seem to be confusing you.
They are also protecting the very monument you just admired from people expressing just a bit too much of their 1a rights.

Btw. Just incase you've never read it 1a doesn't include the right to destroy other people's property, that's not really freedom of speech.

Really interesting example of the limited emotional reasoning I pointed out above.
Abraham Lincoln freed slave = good. (First emotion)
Then that get overwritten/overwhelmed the second when the rioters wants to vandalize his monument, because rioters = better. (New emotion) and obviously the army looking guy protecting Lincoln is now bad.

I don't support them standing there.

Even when Nixon was struggling with all his protests he kept the memorial open and openly sat and spoke with protestors at the Memorial.

But, given that, not fair to call those soldiers Confederates.

Tennessee National Guard and the Air National Guard are a good bunch.

My worry with the Guard comes when they face more stressful situations and a miscalculation from one soldier leads to a disaster.

The protesters always need to get right up in their face. Can they not 1A 2 meters back?
It's not like any of these guys killed Floyd and now needs to be confronted.

Uhm. Unnecessary to call in the military for one guy screaming in another guys face. There was no looting, no property damage, no murder. Everything worked out okay.

And carrying guns with them isn't a problem.

1A and all that. It's applicable to both sides.

Bystanders and witnesses have said that the crowd was not protesting when the police arrived. Police claim that they were returning fire after the crowd began shooting.

Yes obviously a bit too trigger happy with a crowd of people there. Its completely unacceptable that they would shoot into a crowd unless the crowd were charging at them or something like Marikana.

Accidents like this are bound to happen if you have terrorist organisations like Antifa as part of your protest.

Six cops were charged with murder for Marikana.
