This Grassley?

Did you read the letter? Are you saying that he is lying?

Oh, btw, you do realise that the FBI investigated Clarence Thomas because he was a Federal employee, the so called assault took place on Federal property, and therefore falls under Federal jurisdiction at the time of allegations? The alleged crime against Ford is a State crime.

Kavanaugh has already testified (under oath, and therefore the penalty of perjury) refuting these claims. Ford should now come and testify. The Senate Judiciary Committee has the power to subpoena. They should subpoena Ford, Kavanaugh and all potential witnesses and get to the bottom of this.

Rod Rosenstein Suggested Secretly Recording Trump and Discussed 25th Amendment

WASHINGTON — The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, suggested last year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit.

Mr. Rosenstein made these suggestions in the spring of 2017 when Mr. Trump’s firing of James B. Comey as F.B.I. director plunged the White House into turmoil. Over the ensuing days, the president divulged classified intelligence to Russians in the Oval Office, and revelations emerged that Mr. Trump had asked Mr. Comey to pledge loyalty and end an investigation into a senior aide.

I’ve been chuckling about this for a while... It has Bill Shine written all over it.

Donnie Treason has to back out of his ‘declassification’ fishing expedition without having Rosenstein in the hook to fire him, and then this breaks...

From anonymous, secondhand “sources”.

Queue the regular MAGA folk jumping in to back those patriots “insisting on anonymity” and vouching for the journalistic integrity of the NYT in 3... 2...

Really? What's the downside of being an American in Trumps America? Economic growth at record levels and unemployment way down from recent years. Even if Trump is a clueless idiot, why should Americans care? How have they been harmed by his presidency, and how does it outweigh the fact that they are better off than before he was president? "OMG, he's just so embarrassing!".

The 1400 people that'll likely die from him gutting pollution regulation will be a bit worse off.

Oh, and since I'm making a rare appearance in this thread: what good did Obama being smart, charming and diplomatic do for America? What did he achieve that made average Americans lives better?

You mean besides digging the economy out of the massive hole Bush and the Repubs put it in, staving off another depression, cutting the uninsured rate in half, cutting bankruptcies from medical bills in half, strengthening policies that kept 44 million Americans out of poverty in the last year, etc. etc.

US policy of recent decades has been about doing the "right" thing for your neighbour and the downtrodden (read one sided trade deals and sub prime loans), which is all well and good when you've got a full pantry. The problem is when you're doing more for others than yourself, your pantry starts to get empty. This is the narrative Trump is pushing and people have seen results. I think the American memory is long enough to remember that until at least the next elections.

Yes, Trump lied unabashedly and campaigned on racism and demagoguery, and is supported wholeheartedly by the conservative establishment. While at the same time enriching the millionaire and billionaire class and enriching himself and his cronies.

It can work. See: Malema/EFF and the ANC.

The more I think about it, the more I become convinced that unless Trump is impeached or there is an economic downturn Trump will go into the next elections as the favourite.

Quite possibly. Incumbents are generally the favourite, and economic concerns are generally the most important factor for most people. He's extraordinarily unpopular for a president operating with a good economy, though.

One thing I'll give him credit for - he's made good Fed picks! Continuing Obama's trend.

Lmfao. Did they mean anything last elections?

The joke is you know they didn't. Why would you think they mean anything now?

Edit: ag, you know what? You guys were completely wrong last time and you argued your completely wrong arguments into the ground right up until the last moment. I'm not going to spend the next year trying to convince you that you are wrong again.

We know that polls and the MSM can be very, very wrong and that's all you have.

Actually, yes they did. They were broadly accurate and within the accepted and understood margin of error, including for the presidential election, which only required the result to be within 1% or 2% of the margin of error to see Trump win in a select few states, which he did.

I realise you don't like looking at actual data or evidence and prefer 'lmfao derp' type reactions, but here's a good analysis:

Oh. My bad. You want to put me into a box because I don't support Hillary Clinton either?

What? Literally no one mentioned Clinton. What does this have to do with her? I don't think she was anyone here's first choice, at all.

You believe I am not being impartial as I am judging Ocasio-Cortez too harshly because she is a woman?

No, I think you're using a double standard in judging AOC, given the context of the kind of people the Republican party elevate.

She owned up to the mistakes afterward. Show me one time Trump has admitted he's mistaken on the copious BS he spouts. Or any other senior conservative politician.

I just want to point out the following on Kavanaugh vs Ford:
  1. Feinstein sat on the letter since July and it came out right before his confirmation. Feinstein and all the other Senators have had confidential meetings and discussions with Kavanaugh. Why was this not even mentioned then at the very least? There are three simple answers: (1) Feinstein thought that the accusations were not credible, (2) she thought that they were not relevant and/or (3) she wanted to use it to torpedo a man's career and allow the Democrats to try win back Senate majority, which would mean they would be able to reject Trump's next nominee.
  2. If the letter was released in July, it would have given the Republicans enough time to find another candidate.
  3. Ford's allegations were leaked to the press without Ford's consent. How is that for irony?
  4. Ford cannot provide any further evidence to corroborate her story. She self admitted that the detail around the alleged incident is very hazy. Ford cannot give the address or the date of the alleged incident, or any other details. What exactly is there to investigate? The FBI has already done 8 separate investigations into Kavanaugh. If they have not uncovered anything by now, what do you think this will achieve? Here is Mark Judge's response: https://www.vox.com/2018/9/18/17876...vanaugh-mark-judge-sexual-assault-allegations
  5. On top of that, Ford went for a lie detector test and had an attorney appointed in August. All before all of this came out. Not really the actions of a woman that wanted to remain anonymous. Who is paying for all this as well?
  6. Discussing the alleged incident with a third party is not proof that the incident occurred, and that her interpretation of what happened is completely correct.
  7. Kavanaugh has many, many women come forward supporting him (ex girlfriends and female colleagues). If this is a pattern of behaviour, more women would have come forward by now as demonstrated in the #MeToo movement.

1. Or maybe she was grappling how to deal with a serious allegation in a sensitive context? Referring it to the FBI doesn't seem unreasonable given they are responsible for background investigations. Given that she hasn't opposed any of Trump's other nominees procedurally, why would she just randomly oppose this one?
2. What do you mean "enough time"? What is the rush? There is no deadline. There is literally no reason to rush this through. None. They can do this whenever the hell they want, they control the Senate. They have a laundry list of nominees lined up by the conservative lobby group they used to decide for them.
3. Not sure that changes anything.
4. Judge is worth talking to about this stuff, considering he wrote memoirs about his youthful adventures. Also scrubbed a lot of his online presence
5. You don't think you can hire a lawyer or take a lie detector test anonymously? If she remained anonymous she would have been written off.
6. Sounds like it would be a good idea to investigate further then.
7. That's not at all obvious, and lining up women that he didn't harass or assault... I mean... Worth noting he was in a Yale frat nicknamed "Tit and Clit", whose more recent motto was "no means yes, and yes means anal". Also, Yale law professors advised prospective clerks to his office that he liked his clerks to have a "certain look", and another Yale law prof warned prospective clerks about 2 judges - Kozinski (who it came out later is a sex pest) and Kavanaugh, who clerked for Kozinski and has been alleged it's absurd that he didn't know about Kozinski's shenanigans.

Emjay said:
This is not even about his confirmation anymore. Ford (and her trauma) is being used. It's a pretty serious indication of how the #MeToo movement has been used for other purposes.

Actually, no. It's been a pretty good (and another) example of how some of the most powerful people (usually men) are deemed beyond accountability and the Republican party in general doesn't actually think sexual assault is a serious issue that should merit any real investigation or accountability. See also: their response to Trump's own 20+ accusers, Roy Moore, Bill Shine (who was fired from Fox for covering sexual assault and harassment for decades and now works in the White House), Bill Porter, Bill O'Reilly, Roger Ailes, Steve Wynn, etc.

I emulated OrbitalDawn's post to demonstrate how silly it is.

How is it silly? People were (for some reason, incredulously) asking why she didn't just report it. I posted an article that shows how a 12 year old did report it and got her life destroyed by everyone around her. It's also no coincidence that the people who ask this question are in no rush to try to understand why women don't, or to try and fix the problem.

Quite timely, have a look at the hashtag WhyIDidntReport to see more stories of why.

And false accusations (while horrible and rightly punishable) are nowhere near as endemic as sexual violence against women.

Apropos of that, Ed Whelan, one of the most respected members of the conservative establishment in Washington, and incidentally a great friend of Kavanaugh, came up with a bizarre theory of why it was actually a friend of Kavanaugh's (who is a middle school teacher) that was the attempted rapist. How's that for a false accusation?

And now it brings up questions about whether Kavanaugh or the White House is involved in floating this ridiculous theory, especially since Mitch McConnell's chief of staff had knowledge about it before hand. McConnell also admitted last night at a conservative summit that they don't actually care about the accusation at all and they'll confirm him. So much for honestly trying to figure the truth out.

And he's already lied to the Senate 5 times, as you admitted. Why would he not lie about this, too?

And yeah, who's stopping a proper investigation from happening...?

In summary, there's only one party here that wants less transparency, less actual truth-seeking, less honest investigation, less hearing from relevant witnesses, and more haste, more opaqueness - you know who that is.

UPDATE: Am being told Trump is abandoning his declassification request altogether. His deferral to the IG is about an already ongoing review of the FISA process and opening of the Russia probe that was announced in June.

So much for that. Deep state must have gotten to him.

Trump walks back his plan to declassify Russia probe documents

Haha, who would have thought declassifying damaging documents could be so complicated.

Wait, let me guess what the left liberal will say - It was all in the plan, right?

Oh no! NBFTW was ready to start putting heads on pikes for TREASON!!!!!

GOP lawmaker's siblings endorse Dem opponent: 'Difficult to see my brother as anything but a racist'

Multiple siblings of Rep. Paul Gosar are coming out in support of his Democratic opponent, accusing the Arizona Republican of racism.

The Phoenix New Times reported that Democratic House candidate David Brill unveiled a series of ads at a fundraiser on Thursday that feature Gosar's siblings denouncing the conservative four-term congressman.

Six of Gosar's sblings — Tim Gosar, Jennifer Gosar, Gaston Gosar, Joan Gosar, Grace Gosar and David Gosar — decry his views on policies such as health care and immigration, adding that their brother's positions have torn the family apart.

"It would be difficult to see my brother as anything but a racist," Grace Gosar says

Ok, as this is an appointment that holds power, the burden of proof is lower as it is a political matter, and not a legal one. In your mind, Ford has made a compelling case, which case consists of 36 year old memories, a lie detector test, and hearsay evidence. This is now the standard of evidence we require before we destroy a man's life?

I might add that Ford's new advisor is Ricki Seidman. This is a person who worked for the Senate Committee for Senator Tedd Kennedy all the way back to the Anita Hill hearings. Ricki Seidman is the person that solicited Anita Hill to come forward with her allegations against Clarence Thomas. She also worked as Joe Biden's communications director during the 2008 general election campaign. In 2009 she worked on the confirmation of Sonia Sotamajor. Does this sound non-partisan to you?

Ya just can't make this **** up...

Spokesman for GOP on Kavanaugh nomination resigns; has been accused of harassment in the past

WASHINGTON — A press adviser helping lead the Senate Judiciary Committee’s response to a sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has stepped down amid evidence he was fired from a previous political job in part because of a sexual harassment allegation against him.

Garrett Ventry, 29, who served as a communications aide to the committee chaired by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, had been helping coordinate the majority party's messaging in the wake of Christine Blasey Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her 36 years ago at a high school party. In a response to NBC News, Ventry denied any past "allegations of misconduct."

After NBC News raised questions about Ventry's employment history and the sexual harassment allegation against him, Judiciary Committee Spokesman Taylor Foy replied in a statement: "While (Ventry) strongly denies allegations of wrongdoing, he decided to resign to avoid causing any distraction from the work of the committee."

Lawyer for Kavanaugh Accuser Caught on Camera at ‘Resist’ Rally as Clinton Accuser Offers to Testify

The lawyer for Dr. Christine Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both high school students in the ’80s, was present at a so-called Resist rally in 2017.

:rolleyes:o_Oo_Oo_O

Resistance

Katz spoke about her anti-Trump sentiment recently, telling The Gargoyle, an alumni magazine for the University of Wisconsin Law School, in August that she’s committed to being part of the so-called resistance.

Okay, so you're just going to ignore all the information in that post...

Anyway, so she's getting advise from someone who helped someone else who was previously railroaded in a sham hearing by Republicans. Can't imagine why...

And obviously it won't be a conservative/Repub lawyer, so where else would she go for advice?

Also, how's this for coincidence?

PR firm helped Whelan stoke half-baked Kavanaugh alibi

It turns out that the Keystone Cops detective work by conservative legal activist Ed Whelan — which set Washington abuzz with the promise of exonerating Brett Kavanaugh, only to be met by mockery and then partially retracted — was not his handiwork alone.

CRC Public Relations, the prominent Alexandria, Virginia-based P.R. firm, guided Whelan through his roller-coaster week of Twitter pronouncements that ended in embarrassment and a potential setback for Kavanaugh’s hopes of landing on the high court

..

Its current clients include the Federalist Society and the Judicial Crisis Network, the chief outside groups working to help confirm Kavanaugh.

At least 2 GOP Senate staffers tweeted about this before it came out, and they've already admitted they don't care whether it's true or not, and won't call any other relevant witnesses. How obvious do they have to make it...?
