I do digital painting - which is so this century. There are people that consider eating as much as you can in the smallest amount of time a sport. I put this in the same "sport" category.

I think you guys are misinterpretting what Brendon is saying in his posts. It's not about the merits of gaming, painting, sports or socialising and whether one is more constructive than another. Instead its about whether you have a balance in you lifestyle. Most activities can be productive in some way or another as long as its done within moderation. Obsession and single mindedness is generally never a good thing. Think smokers-chainsmokers; social drinkers-alcoholics; gymmers-steroid/hormone body builders. Gamers-...

Last time I checked most people appreciate the arts and music far more than what the average contribution to society, which the average closet-bound, obsessed gamer provides.

As for gaming being a sport I believe you and agree that it is viable for a select group of people. Yet the question of obsession still comes into play. If a person played rugby/golf/ tennis etc for 6 hours or more and that person played the sport on a professional level(for cash), then it would be acceptable as it would be his chosen job. On the otherhand if that person had other responsibilities/jobs and only played the sport as a hobby then I would have to say that +6 hours would be an obsession. This is exactly the same for gaming.

Are you a Pro gamer?
(In SA most likely not...hell there is only a small percentage out of all the gamers in the world which a pro gamers)
Do you play +6 hours a day?
(Ask this question to yourself and think about it)

How do they tell the difference?

Ok, this may be slightly off topic, but if you have an account with an ISP like OpenWeb (they offer a 3GB cap with 30GB local access after cap) how do they differentiate between local and international access on the network side of things (like after you authenticate and you're actually online)

It sounds very appealing, and I'm considering all my options - I don't VPN and I probably won't be using 30GB of MWEB's free mp3's. I'm not too sure if 30GB of local access is all it's made out to be, and it seems like there must be some kind of catch... iBurst seem like they have the right idea, with their 64kbps throttling model.

Isn't it illegal to offer soft capping anyway?

No isps differentiate between local and international. When u are in your initial 3gb cap, both local and international get deducted from it

Ok, so then once you're capped how is your bandwidth 'shaped' to only allow you access to local sites? Surely it must require some kind of configuration of some server somewhere to monitor international sites and block them? Because as you correctly said, Turbo, no ISP differentiates between local and international...

And if that capping is being done to one user, how is it not being done across the board to all users serviced by that ISP? Does OpenWeb (or any ISP that offers local access after being capped) use some form of mutant MPLS to do this?

iirc there was talk about capped used being allocated ips from a "capped" pool. these ips would not be able to push packets further than the routers on the edge of the local cloud

Personally if you were interested in Local Only I'd recommend looking at some of the ISP that allows reduced interrnational browsing with your local bandwidth (just search here on this excellent forum) OR if your employer offers a VPN (Virtual Private Network) Solution where you can connect to your company and then browse internationally on their Bandwidth, then this solution would come highly recommended.

Just remember you'll still be restricted by your companie's proxy rules when using that method.

Hope my post is useful! :D

Also when your company offers VPN access from your house; then that traffic is local only; but you can still enjoy your companies international access. Take note that the companies proxy rules apply still. Usually that means no gaming and defnitely not porn surfing either (besides porn is bad for you :$ lol)
