No, you were right. No garmin is under R2000. It's only tomtoms that are so cheap.

Cell phones have the advantage of having a data connection, so they have Assisted-GPS. This is only used to download info about the satellites to make the discovery process quicker. It can be disabled completely. Giving you the same, slower discovery speed as a normal GPS unit.
The maps can and normally are loaded onto the phone, so you need no data connection at all. Some of the free software out there needs the data connection to work, but its not the case with the purchased software (Garmin, TomTom, etc)
I was also pissed off at the blatant untruth of the advert. I lodged a complaint at ASA, and eventually received a polite email saying they were already dealing with a complaint for the same advertising and "for every new complaint the advertiser is afforded a further 5 days in which to respond". So my complaint wasn't even heard.
What crap is this that the advertiser gets an extra 5 days for each complaint? What if 100 people complain? Can they go on for 500 days using false advertising?
