I want to get an iPhone, and was planning to get a separate GPS (because I want a decent GPS vehicle navigation system).
I've got a friend with an iPhone who uses google maps. Its okay to manually find stuff, but it requires internet access, so uses bandwidth and is slow, and does not tell you where to go etc so you have to look at the screen all the time.

Are there any decent GPS packages for iPhone?
Anyone here have experience with this?

I use the TomTom app and it works great. It's totally eliminated any need I might previously have had for a stand alone device.

The maps are included in the app so there is no need for an internet connection.

Tom Tom with the car kit works like a dream - I hear the Navigon system works well 2

Yes I use Navigon and it is great... btw I have a standalone Garmin which I bought a few years ago. I have no need for that any longer :)

Gizmodo reviewed GPS apps, Navigon was the Best, bare in mind this was on US based maps. (google it)-

I have navigon, its $10 more than tom tom, and its awesome :)

I 2nd the TomTom and TomTom carkit route :) Seamless integration, just waiting on the little sticky dongle from TomTom so I can use my iPhone4 without having to stick a piece of folded up paper behind the phone :)

I vote TomTom. I was using Navigon with my wireless headset in my helmet and the app crashed. Overshot my target on ontdeckers by about 10km waiting for the next voice prompt

+1 for TomTom. Heard good things about Navigon, not sure if they have local maps though.

One important benefit of these GPS apps is that the maps are stored locally, so do not require Internet to work. Therefore, navigation is free.

Enjoy! ;)

I think tomtom with the car kit would be the best..... anyone know where to get them from and how much they are?

The car kit can be purchased from Dions wired abt R1200 I think

TomTom is the best, I used my Garmin not so long ago to go to the KNP and it got me lost. Thank God for TomTom.

Garmin have just released their own Streetpilot app for the iPhone. Revealed at CES.

Yeah but their maps are not loaded onto the iPhone u need to have a data line while using it - so if you travel outside of your coverage area then it's useless and with cellphone data costs this ver from Garmin will cost a fortune to use. I cannot understand why the have gone this route but I'll stay with Tom Tom for now. My Garmin QuestII lying on the shelf gathering dust atm.

We won't know if the map is pre-loaded until they release it here. Certainly the versions for Symbian operated the same way as Tom Tom.

They haven't done so in the US so why would they change it for SA?

Navigon Southern Africa (namibia, SA, botswana...etc) is available on itunes store...SA an US store.....for $60.....share this cost with friends....as you can have your account authorize 5 pcs at same time.....
