Using phones to cheat in exams

I thought phones weren't allowed inside exam rooms, or at least had to be turned off.

cellphone/bluetooth/gprs/wifi jammers are cheap.. just install them in the school.. or get the portable ones...

Well in our final matric exams last year, we had to hand in our cellphones to the invigilators. If we didn't - and even if they were off - we would be investigated for cheating. At UCT they're a bit more relaxed - your cellphone must just be off, but you can still have it on you so to speak.

We had this for our matric finals too back in the day. At Tuks they frown upon you if your phone rings during an exam but they won't kill you.

In our Matric year, the phones were all put in a box or in our bags and we could get it again after finishing the exams. At varsity we were allowed phones on our person, but they had to be switched off.

Agreed but invigilation at Tuks has been pretty good for all my modules, and the repercussions for getting caught are so severe I don't think too many people are that stupid.

we had one guy getting caught earlier this year for cheating - we never saw or heard from him again. Its purely stupid.

Won't be seeing him anytime soon, you forfeit all credits for the year and can't study anywhere in SA for the next 4 years, it's the same if you are caught plagiarizing/cheating in any formal assessment (IE. practical/project/semester test). Not worth it IMHO.

I can tell you few horror stories about plagiarism at UP, which include cheating in exams. Believe me, you won't sleep for the rest of your life. :D

Gnome that sounds more like urban legend, I never heard of penalties so severe being placed on a student. Worst I've heard of is local expulsion.

dappled : If you're caught cheating at university, and then excluded... the exclusion applies to all tertiary institutions in the country.... or at least they won't accept you for a good long while, if EVER.

As for the phone being handed in during an exam... They tried that with me when I was at varsity and I told the to fly a kite.... I'd switch it off and it would be in my pocket, but it was not leaving my person... they fought for a bit but eventually gave in, although I was watched like a hawk for the first two or three exams.

ToxicBunny: Do you know of any person who has been subjected to such punishment for cheating?

I know many who have cheated. They have been penalised in various ways, including local exclusion, but never nationally excluded.

Personally no I don't know anyone who has had such happen to them.

I do know of at least 2 people who have been nationally excluded for cheating, but this was not at undergrad level so yeah...
