At long last I got my hands on a Telkom 3G/HSDPA Sim. Activation was done in-store (Telkom Direct Store) and while the purchasing process was laborious connecting using this SIM was easy: popped it into an old Huwei E270, entered my pin and done.

So far the performance is good - not great - but I do fall way outside of the coverage area which Telkom gives on their website. Very usable though...especially since my ADSL modem was fried :)

How far outside coverage area, what are your treansfer rates?

Interestingly, there seems to be a tower in Port Elizabeth (SA 02 id), I didn't use it because I thaught there was not supposed to be signal down there and I hadn't taken the card with me on holiday

D

What does the telkom sim look like? Does sound like i would be able to pop the sim into my 3G hsdpa phone and use the network...something like the 3 network (umts only)...and looking at the prices it might be a hit....jst maybe

Correct - same SIM as Vodacom and MTN - and it works with 3G phones and data cards.

Got my first bill for "Do on the move 500Mb" in the post from Telkom today (invoice date 21 Dec)
At first couldnt understand why they charge R 227... then I saw, its pro-rata for the portion of last month, and the next full month.... (u know how u just expect Telkom to f-up something :p )
I see they charged sim and connection fee, and then did the credit - was mos supposed to be free during december.
Their billing run seems to be from the 21st of the month to 20th of the next month ... funny how very few companies these days seem to work on a 1 - 31 day month
Maybe its the 'illusion' that a month-end somewhere inbetween the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month, is less stressfull? I prefer a proper 1-30/31 day month tho.
At least now I know I should check that I use as much remaining data before the 19th of each month, less to go to wastage :D
...reminds me, I must go check tonite if new 500Mb bundle is loaded

Mine runs from the 11th to the 12th. They told me it's different for everyone. They still don't have an easy way of checking bandwidth usage thought because smsing "2222" didn't work and calling the given number didn't work either. They said they'll be checking into that though.

Doesnt the bandwidth usage tool on telkom website work with the Do 3G packages?

jeeez, everybody having a different month end on their account must be hell on the accounts dept.... or maybe they have a 'smart' system?
I also noticed the SMS thing doesnt work to check data balance... will have to keep manual track of each days usage, until they can sort it out.
If u only use 1 computer and 1 connection software, u can sorta check the data counter to keep track.
Me, I use the modem on 2 laptops, and chop & change between the MTN software, the Huawei connect, and Jinggs-exe.
I dont use that much data... but wife & kids can heartily rip into a databundle with all the **** they look up on the internet, so I gotta keep an eye on balance.

How do you keep track of your data usage with a E220 modem? The 0833 number does not work.

Another shortfall is that Do 3G does not come with an email account

For data balance, sms "do" to 2222 from the device.

The E220 that I have is from MTN so I dont think the firmware would allow me to send the SMS to the Telkom network.

Just get a gmail account.
+1
ISP complimentary email accounts are a waste of time, because when you decide it's time for a new ISP/package, you're bound by your current e-mail address and can't cancel the account without losing the email address...
