Using Windows XP? Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 Support Ends April 8, 2014

I got XP much smaller back when I still tinkered with nLite. About ARM, no one said use RT, there are much better ARM friendly OSes out there.

Actually CRT is more robust than LCD, they can sustain a lot more wear and still function than any other tech out there.

Also XP can be cut to a very small footprint I can get a full Windows XP install down to 300 MB on my Eee Pad. It still capable of running Office 97 and Photoshop CS2 as well. Trust me there are things the latest version of Windows can not do, hell even the ARM version of Windows 8 needs over 5 gig of install space.

Dude, dump your EEE Pad. Get a big Windows tablet with 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM with NVIDIA 2GB GPU to visit Facebook and watch Youtube. That's what the industry wants you to do. You're a dinosaur if you fight against it. Anti-progress you are. ;)

In evolutionary terms, things which work don't really need to change. There are still plants and animals which have changed little over millions of years, because they're most optimal as they are. There is no necessary reason to adapt. There is only MS which wants to kill XP. But it's not as if an asteroid hit us or there is an unavoidable change in habitat.
Wrong, there are plenty of "parasites" and Windows is the main "plant" they attack. Now Windows has evolved over the years and it became more resilient. Sure there are still some of the older ones around but the parasites will kill them off soon enough.

All of em need over 300 MB install base and none of them keeps M$ Win compatibility.

General rule, if it ain't broken do not fix it.

Sure there are places that needs the later and greater, example my Desktop is a i7 with 8 gig ram and runs 8.1, but that is because I use if for games/Win 8 development. My netbook on the other hand is just for general use and presentations and still works. According to your view I should go fill a garbage heap with it and waste money on a new one just because there is new tech.

Windows XP survived since 2001. Now it won't survive because MS refuses to patch it anymore. They have every right to. But it's also correct to point out that they're doing it to make more profit for themselves and their partners. The little guy ends up paying more. But to still apologise for this and present industry hype as fact.... come on. :)

My netbook on the other hand ....
Is wasting electricity because your phone can do more that what that netbook is capable of.
But it's also correct to point out that they're doing it to make more profit for themselves and their partners.
What about Windows 2000? Or Windows NT4?
They are not forcing you to buy their products, you are free to use a variety of other OSes that are better in some aspects and still give you the ability to do all the things you want to do.

Sure, I am gonna plug my phone into a projector at a meeting and not care about incoming calls or text messages.

Face it, there are things that work for a reason.

I can clearly see with your arguments that you do not run a company.

And his phone has a full (or almost) full sized QWERTY keyboard and 11 inch screen?

Win2K could still be supported but it did not have as many numbers as Win XP. NT4 on older hardware - sure. NT4 and 2K were not consumer operating systems so there won't be so many out there.

Not forcing me to buy their products? Well MS has been fined by the USDOJ in the past for a variety of anti-consumer activities and accused of others. For example if you wanted to sell PCs, you had to sell them with Windows or risk having to pay more for Windows OEM licenses. Of course they're also not putting a gun to my head. But if you go to any computer shop, except for Apple, how many alternative operating systems will you find?

And as said I did point out MS is correct to cut support, it makes financial sense for it to cut the umbilical cord. But it's still bad news and disadvantageous for most XP users of whom there are millions. MS cutting XP support is not a decision based on inevitability. It's based on maximising profit. Which is OK, after all MS exists to make profit and not make life easier and cheaper for us. Just don't buy the marketing hype and FUD.

MS Office? What are you smoking, even in Windows I run Libre Office.
Why do you want to run Acrobat ? I thought you said you did not have 8GB RAM to fill with bloat.

I have valid reasons to run Acrobat to edit and create PDF files. I have valid reasons to use MS Office to exchange Word, Excel and emails with other people who run Office. And these things run OK with 1-2GB of RAM.

Ok let me rephrase, you should seriously try Libre Office, Samutra PDF (and Ubuntu).

I don't need to do anything when things work 100% perfectly as they are. But thanks for the suggestion.

I don't want to run LibreOffice etc because of compatibility issues. I have paid for licenses of Acrobat, Office and these things work 100%.

I'll check back next year this time to see how things are with you lot and XP.
I'll be fine thanks - I appreciate your concern!

(As long as my current scanner and photo printer work, XP as a Vbox guest OS will do the job for me. I don't need ms's updates...)

An example. Customer has a rack of computers with custom software on. These 8 systems communicate with each other to perform a certain complex task in a factory. The system including software was imported lets say 5 years ago for lets say R600 000.
Better hardware will not see any performance/accuracy improvement? I find this highly unlikely.

According to the China News Agency, they have persuaded MS to continue to support Windows XP beyond the scheduled cut-off date, since there are several million Govt Agencies still using XP and they don't want to have to upgrade
