Ye, I know what you mean. We still have 2 XP boxes at our office. They are terribly slow but won't have to deal with them much longer, replacing them with new Windows 8 machines which only cost around 4.5k each.

What's hugely interesting to me is that a couple of years back you would have tried to figure out why the box was slowing down, now you just replace it?

Without AV software and internet access, my 3 XP vbox machines outperform 2 w8 machines I've been lumped with.

Couple of years back we didn't have PCs that were faster than this, it was normal for them to be this slow. Now people are used to not waiting on things and get more work done on the newer PCs.
 
WinXP also has tends to "rot" a lot quicker than Win7/8 machines. I've done fresh installs a few times on the XP boxes while the Win7 boxes are still fine.

Because it works? Because some hardware requires it? Because some software requires it? Because some people are used to it? 4 very good reasons.

Sure. The remedy to that is not to install too much useless crud. OSX can also rot.

2008 2GB XP box I have in the office is faster than 2012 Windows 7 boxes.
 
I have tried explaining to my friends and family why they need to upgrade and the problem is that their pc is too old and/or its too expensive to purchase a new operating system.......oh well

You evidently haven't run XP without AV - AV causes more rot than you may ever realise.

For me, with the software I regularly use and my own programs, XP works, and works a helluva lot better than Win7 with its ghastly file manager, not mentioning that cockup called Win8. I have XP running on my i5 and my i7, and a number of older machines.

No. He's using 2005 Ferrari engine management software on his 2013 Ferrari engine. The 2013 version has some cool features which he does not need nor want because they reduce his productivity, and he already has the older version which works well enough for his purpose, so he saved some money too.

I'm pretty sure his i5 and i7 laptops would've come with either Win 7 or 8 licenses so he isn't saving anything and he's just too lazy to learn the new interface that is far more efficient if you learn to use it properly.
 
people can say what they like. This is what I have
Windows XP SP3 (for stuff that cannot run on Linux)
Kubuntu (for everything else)

The XP is patch and modded to make it able to use more RAM. Due to Microsoft deprecating the following in their infinte wisdom:
- Some form controls (combo boxes) from old versions of Visual C++
- Rewrite of the USB CDC drivers, rendering thousands of hardware devices and machines that use this, useless

I cannot use anything else except XP.

As for the hardware and software concerned, its all technical applications used for designing electronic systems, and for debugging embedded targets. The companies do not update their hardware every six months because its not necessary, embedded processors have a life cycle of 10-15 years+

I have a total investment of around R60k of tools that are working, in good condition, and haven't been updated by the manufacturer, and I cannot make them work with Win7 due to the idiotic nature of that OS.

There are other cases too... machines that run XP, such as CNC machines, pick and place machines... they will simply not work with Windows 7, due to the USB driver issue and other issues surrounding the fact that Microsoft changed the I/O subsystem

Did he say these were laptops and not self built desktop systems?
You can get a refund on OEM licenses in some cases.
Some software/hw does not work with newer versions of Windows. He's saving money that way too.

Dude you'll be conveniently ignored. Don't you know you're an anti-progress dinosaur. You should trash your 60K worth of stuff, spend probably R120K on new stuff to do exactly the same thing but with new cool menus and slightly better energy management on your CPU. ;)
