utTraceStar: analyse your iBurst connection

utTraceStar Cape Town towers

Hello! Thanks for a fantastic piece of software. After adding a static route on my firewall, sending all traffic to the UT-D's IP via the IP of the relevant Ethernet interface, I was able to access the box from my LAN (currently allowing all LAN -> Internet).

utTraceStar displays data, but since there is no tower information for Cape Town in the towers.ini file, I get an exception ("Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: '0' is not a valid value for 'index'."). Has anybody put this information together yet? If not, can I help out? I don't think there are many towers in Cape Town yet. Thanks for any info.

Help will be appreciated with tower mapping :) Don't know if the info is in the iConnect towers.ini yet... Actually didn't get round to check out towers in Cpt in Dec.

Was about to suggest that I would willingly trek the countryside with my laptop and UT-D, but didn't quite think through the technicalities of powering the UT-D on the move. From where I'm at, connecting to CPT CBD tower, it looks like I can see about 5 live towers, with several "ghosts" thrown in for good measure. What are those, anyway?

With the iBurst coverage map and the distance given in utTraceStar you might be able to make reasonable estimates of the tower number - name mappings.

Not sure what the ghosts are, get them here as well.

Cape town/Durban users please add 0=NoTower (Uplink Failed) in the towers.ini under durban/cape town.

This will fix the bug

[edit]
Only cape town users need to do this

Uploaded new edited v1.0.9 which also has the expiry date adjusted till June 2006. This is just to ensure ppl are kept up to date, and old buggy versions aren't being used instead of newer better versions. (the other release expires at the end of this month)

I wouldn't mind your comments on this matter though, and on the google adverts which seem to be just free advertising for the other side ie not generating enough revenue to cover any costs (not covering domain rental even).

Has the new tower at Epsom Downs been added yet?

I dont think it will be particularly hard to add if I am not mistaken just open the towers.ini file and add the number and name to it. Worth a try though even if it doesnt work.

If I have my antenna pointed at it, how will it know what number tower it is looking at?

you should be able to see what tower you are connected to using the app, if its not listed and has a reasonable number to it and no name then thats probably it.

It will know because it recieves the number from that basestation. That is if you are pointing directly at it and your arial is not picking up a stronger signal from another basestation. (This sometimes happens even with reflected signal).

I haven't added the new towers but will be getting on to it shortly.

Like ravilj said just add it in the correct place with correct format. It is pretty simple.

HELP!!!!
can anyone around here tell me how/if its possible, to get my connection to stay constant? My most frequently connected tower is no 25 (Morningside Westpoint) with stats as follows; Max -69, Avg -76 & Min -81. But connection to this tower does not last for longer than 15 seconds at a time. It then wants to connect to obscure places like Rosebank, Bryanston WT & Soweto with stats like Max -110, Avg -112 & Min -116. After wich it'll just connect back to tower 25. My signal strenght graph looks like something out of a scene of ER.

Please, if anybody has any advise, please post it.

I had a similar problem recently, seeing 3 strong towers and a handful of weak towers. Great if it just chose one of the strong towers and kept the connection. But no, it was switching between Hyde Park, Randburg and Illovo (all +- 75db). That wouldn't be so bad, but every few minutes, while hopping about, it would connect to some obscure far-off basestation and my connection would instantly die.

I solved the problem by getting a directional antenna, which focused on Hyde Park (now -67db). As long as Hyde Park is up and running, that's the tower I get. If it's down I get Randburg (now -72db). And being directional, those are the only two towers the antenna can see.

Just to clarify for me... the directional antenna isnt the one you et from WBS right? It is one you have to buy seperately.

Because I have a WBS antenna curently aimed at a base staion far away from me, but a new one should be comming up much closer, but at a pretty different angle. Should I move that antena or will it pick up the new statio fine being non-directional.

BTW, the new tower should be about 90 degrees to the left of the antenna. So parrele to the wall whihc the antenna is currently sitting on.

I got this one:

http://www.phoenixnet.co.za/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38&products_id=81

so I can't really speak for the WBS antenna.

They are both directional so you will have to adjust it EHV.

The one from phoenixnet is however more powerfull and more directional, but if you have already bought the wbs, the difference is too marginal to go out and buy the other.

I say this having tested both arials in person, in general the phoenixnet one is the better choice, they chaim to get 18db increase thats 8db over wbs one. I only saw about 3db increase in my situation.

Trixanno: Take gatecrashers advice. Also note that I have seen strange results like that when capped. (who knows why ... maybe your priority[percieved signal strength] is dropped when capped)

Hi Seburn, the link for the new version doesn't work. Doesn't seem like the file was uploaded.
